A population balance model for fish population dynamics

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1979
Abstract A population balance model of fish population dynamics for batch systems was developed. A growth rate expression was introduced and coupled with the population balance. Solutions of the model provide predictions of such fish size distribution characteristics as average size, standard deviation and coefficient of variation.

Population Balance Modeling of Antibodies Aggregation Kinetics

The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2012
The aggregates morphology and the aggregation kinetics of a model monoclonal antibody under acidic conditions have been investigated. Growth occurs via irreversible cluster-cluster coagulation forming compact, fractal aggregates with fractal dimension of 2.6.

Population balance models of autonomous microbial oscillations

Journal of Biotechnology, 1995
Autonomous oscillations in continuous microbial cultures is well documented for the case of baker's yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, for which it has been observed under a range of operating conditions. We have found that autonomous microbial oscillations can be modeled by unstructured population balance models in which a key cell cycle parameter is a ...

Considerations on the crystallization modeling: Population balance solution

Computers & Chemical Engineering, 2007
In crystallization processes, the need to improve the product quality and to minimize production cost requires understanding and optimization on how to obtain an appropriate particle-size distribution. In order to achieve this goal, a model of the process is necessary and the distribution of particles must be represented, which is made through the ...

Approximate ODE models for population balance systems

Computers & Chemical Engineering, 2015
Abstract We propose an approximate polynomial method of moments for a class of first-order linear PDEs (partial differential equations) of hyperbolic type, involving a filtering term with applications to population balance systems with fines removal terms.

Discrete bivariate population balance modelling of heteroaggregation processes

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2009
Heteroaggregation in binary particle mixtures was simulated with a discrete population balance model in terms of two internal coordinates describing the particle properties. The considered particle species are of different size and zeta-potential. Property space is reduced with a semi-heuristic approach to enable an efficient solution.

Modelling shear-flocculation by population balances

Chemical Engineering Science, 1987
Abstract A discretized population-balance approach based on a coalescence model is presented in this paper. The population-balance equation was tested for its validity by applying it to two special cases: constant collision-rate function and orthokinetic aggregation of monosized particles.

Polydispersity and the Population Balance Model

2016
In this chapter, an introduction to the concept of polydispersity in multiphase systems and the numerical solution of coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and population balance equation (PBE) using CFD computer codes are presented. PBE is a balance equation based on the number density function and accounts for the spatial and temporal evolutions

Population balance modeling. Promise for the future

Chemical Engineering Science, 2002
Population balance modeling has received an unprecedented amount of attention during the past few years from both academic and industrial quarters because of its applicability to a wide variety of particulate processes. In this article, a fresh look is taken of the basic issues of the application of population balances towards strengthening the ...

Parameter Estimation in Population Balance Models

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2010
The aim of this manuscript is to elucidate some models focusing on the dynamics of cell populations in vitro and to bring them in line with methods established in the context of inverse problems. We concentrate on a population balance model that describes the cell number as a function of time and single cell mass, where the key variable fulfills a ...
