Population balance model for biomass milling

Powder Technology, 2015
Abstract The aim of this work is to develop a model of the milling process of biomass. For this purpose, a classic approach is selected. The breakage probability, characterized by a material mastercurve, and breakage function are used to determine the breakage matrix.

Applications of population balance equation modeling to pharmaceutical emulsions

2009 IEEE 35th Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference, 2009
Emulsions are usually generated in high-pressure homogenization chambers. The flow field is these units are typically highly turbulent and chaotic, and mechanisms for drop formation under these conditions are not well understood. In this paper, we have applied the PBE modeling approach to droplet break-up in a high pressure homogenizer using ...

Population Balance Approach to Modeling Hairy Root Growth

Biotechnology Progress, 2004
Though numerous models have been developed to describe the growth of microbial cell cultures, far fewer models are available to describe the growth of hairy root cultures. Here a population balance model is proposed to simulate the growth of hairy roots.

Population Balance Modeling: Current Status and Future Prospects

Annual Review of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, 2014
Population balance modeling is undergoing phenomenal growth in its applications, and this growth is accompanied by multifarious reviews. This review aims to fortify the model's fundamental base, as well as point to a variety of new applications, including modeling of crystal morphology, cell growth and differentiation, gene regulatory processes, and ...

A population balance model of enzymatic lysis of microbial cells

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1990
AbstractA model is proposed for enzymatic lysis of microbial cells based on number balances over the distribution of cell‐wall mass in a population of cells. Analytical solutions to the population balance equations were obtained by the method of characteristics for simple reaction kinetics.

A population balance approach to the modeling of solid phase reactions

AIChE Journal, 1979
AbstractA population balance approach is used to model solid phase reactions in terms of nuclei of the product phase dispersed in the reactant matrix. A conversion‐time relationship is obtained by the solution of a set of moment equations derived from the population balance.

Population Balance Models for Batch Crystallization

1976
The conservation equation for the mean number of crystals of size L to L + dL, n(L) dL, in a sample of a crystallizing suspension (or magma) is frequently called the “population balance.” As formulated by Randolph and Larson (6) and by Hulburt and Katz (3), for a batch crystallizer it takes the form $$\frac{{\partial n}} {{\partial t}} = \frac ...
