Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Projection matrices in population biology

open access: yesTrends in Ecology & Evolution, 1988
Projection matrix models are widely used in population biology to project the present state of a population into the future, either as an attempt to forecast population dynamics, or as a way to evaluate life history hypotheses. These models are flexible and mathematically relatively easy.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

PICALM::MLLT10 translocated leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review of PICALM::MLLT10 translocated acute leukemia provides an in‐depth review of the structure and function of CALM, AF10, and the fusion oncoprotein (1). The multifaceted molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis, including nucleocytoplasmic shuttling (2), epigenetic modifications (3), and disruption of endocytosis (4), are then ...

Funnel trapping yields largely unbiased sampling of crested and marbled newts (genus Triturus)

open access: yesKnowledge and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems
Amphibian populations are increasingly sampled with traps instead of the traditional dipnet, because of high yields at a comparatively low workload. Observations on sympatric newt species in the west of France uncovered a size effect in which the larger ...

A Stage-Structured, Spatially Explicit Migration Model for Myotis Bats: Mortality location affects system dynamics

open access: yesLetters in Biomathematics, 2014
Bats are ecologically and economically important species because they consume insects, transport nutrients, and pollinate flowers. Many species of bats, including those in the Myotis genus, are facing population decline and increased extinction risk ...

Effects of temporal variability on rare plant persistence in annual [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Traditional conservation biology regards environmental fluctuations as detrimental to persistence, reducing long-term average growth rates and increasing the probability of extinction.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Cuticular component analysis for discrimination of Aedes aegypti (diptera: culicidae) from seven localities in South Kalimantan

open access: yesJournal of Biological Researches, 2008
Cuticular components of female Aedes aegypti from seven localities (populations) in South Kalimantan were compared. Mosquitoes from four populations of Banjarmasin, and one population each of Pelaihari, Barabai, and Kotabaru were sampled.
