Population diversity index

Proceedings of the 13th annual conference companion on Genetic and evolutionary computation, 2011
A number of diversity measures used in evolutionary computing suffer from 'mis-measuring' the diversity of populations. In this paper, we identify and demonstrate this problem using a carefully engineered test suite of six differently arranged populations.

Multistage Index Selection in Finite Populations

Biometrics, 1991
Multistage selection with fixed proportions and selection indices based on covariates of the target variable is studied. Assuming a multivariate normal distribution before the selection, expressions are presented for the expectation and the variance of the target variable in the retained subpopulation. As the numerical evaluation for finite populations

On Smoothing Trends in Population Index Modeling

Biometrics, 2007
SummaryIn this article, we consider the U.K. Common Birds Census counts and their use in monitoring bird abundance. We use a state–space modeling approach within a Bayesian framework to describe population level trends over time and contribute to the alert system used by the British Trust for Ornithology.

A Crowding Index for Finite Populations

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1990
The classical definition of population density used in social science disciplines as a measure of density or physical crowding has severe shortcomings since actual spatial orientation is disregarded. A formula is proposed to measure physical crowding or population density which corrects the deficiency of the conventional formulation.

Index for Measurement of Synchronization of Cell Populations

Science, 1962
An index for the estimation of synchronization in a microbial population is proposed and discussed. The index is equal to the fraction of cells that divide during a measured interval in excess of the fraction that would divide during random growth in the same interval.
