Improvement of Mix Design for Porous Asphalt

ABSTRACT An improved mix design approach for porous asphalt is presented which is based on the packing theory for aggregate gradation optimisation, thus reducing the post-compaction effects of the pavement by traffic loads. Porous Sand-Asphalt Mixtures

Size is relative. Densely graded sand-asphalts are relatively similar to conventional, bituminous concretes. Porous sand-asphalts possess the same attributes as other porous, bituminous mixtures. Surely, sand-asphalt mixtures, can be designed to be as porous as the so-called, open-graded plantmix seals.

In this research study, a strategy was used for assigning stiffness values to various layers of the pavement system so that there are negligible tensile stresses in the subgrade and base layers. The stiffnesses of the aggregate base layers were assigned double the values of the corresponding subgrade materials.

Permeability model of porous asphalt mixture

The void parameters such as void radius and void space are determined by image analysis of porous asphalt mixture sample slice through cosmos image analyzing software, so as to set the grid size and the initial inputs for the permeability model of the porous asphalt mixture. The method of Monte Carlo is used to build the permeability model.
