Experimental Investigation of Mechanism of Lubrication in Porous Journal Bearings: Part 1—Observation of Oil Flow in Porous Matrix

Journal of Tribology, 1990
The oil flow in the porous matrix is experimentally investigated to explicate the mechanism of lubrication in the porous journal bearings. To visualize the flow in the porous matrix, a simplified model is used for the test bearing, whose matrix is composed of packed glass spheres having small uniform diameter.

Running test experiences with porous oil-retaining bronze bearings

Scientific Lubrication, 1952
In our issue of August, 1950, we gave details of the practical applications of oil retaining bearings and discussed the properties and industrial applications of “ Compo ” porous bearings which are manufactured by Bound Brook Bearings, Ltd., Lichfield.

Study on the Surface Activity Parameters of Chosen Oils in the Aspect of Their Application to the Porous Sliding Bearing

ASME/STLE 2011 Joint Tribology Conference, 2011
In the article, the investigative results of the porous bearings and oil samples, with differed surface activity, are described. The analysis of the results showed the surface activity parameters were not well correlated with the moment of friction and the friction coefficient observed during the stand tests.

Study of conical whirl instability of hydrodynamic porous oil journal bearings with tangential velocity slip

Tribology International, 1986
Abstract A theoretical analysis is presented for the stability characteristics of the conical whirling of an unloaded rigid rotor supported in hydrodynamic porous oil journal bearings with tangential velocity slip on the bearing film interface. The rotor has a two degree of freedom motion in self-excited conical whirling.

Steady-state and stability characteristics of hydrostatic two-layered porous oil journal bearings

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2004
Steady state and stability characteristics of hydrostatic two-layered porous oil journal bearings are obtained. The governing differential equations are solved numerically using the finite difference method for a wide range of design parameters. The effects of the eccentricity ratio, slenderness ratio, bearing number, feeding parameter and anisotropy ...

Selectively enhanced oil retention of porous polyimide bearing materials by direct chemical modification

Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 2017
ABSTRACTPorous polyimide (PI) materials containing lubricating oil have been widely used as bearing retainers in aerospace industry. High oil content and retention of porous bearing materials play an important role in assuring a successful mission of the spacecraft.

Effects of surface roughness and porous structure on the hydrodynamic lubrication of multi-layer oil bearing

Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 2017
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the combined effects of the deterministic surface roughness and porous structure on the lubrication property of the multi-layer bearing. Design/methodology/approach Digital filtering technique and Kozeny-Carman equation are used to simulate the random Gauss surface and the internal pore structure of ...

Non-linear dynamic analysis of a flexible rotor supported on porous oil journal bearings

Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation, 2011
Abstract In the present paper, the non-linear dynamic analysis of a flexible rotor with a rigid disk under unbalance excitation mounted on porous oil journal bearings at the two ends is carried out. The system equation of motion is obtained by finite element formulation of Timoshenko beam and the disk.

Effect of Unbalance on the Dynamic Response of a Flexible Rotor Supported on Porous Oil Journal Bearings

2010
The present study deals with non-dimensional dynamic analysis of a flexible rotor with a rigid disk under unbalance excitation mounted on porous oil journal bearings at the two ends. The system equation of motion is obtained by finite element formulation of Timoshenko Beam and the disk and the oil-film forces are calculated from the solution of the ...

Study of Conical Whirl Instability of Externally Pressurized Porous Oil Journal Bearings With Tangential Velocity Slip

Journal of Tribology, 1986
In the present paper, an attempt has been made to study theoretically the conical whirl instability of unloaded hydrostatic porous oil journal bearings with tangential velocity slip on the bearing film interface. The effect of various parameters on stability has also been investigated.
