Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are low-molecular-weight UV-protective compounds, and porphyra-334 and shinorine are common MAAs. Porphyra-334 is synthesized via the conjugation of mycosporine-glycine with threonine, whereas substitution with serine yields shinorine.
