The ileocecal segment: An anti-reflux conduit for hepatic portoenterostomy

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1979
This paper describes an approach to prevent reflux and ascending cholangitis after hepatic portoenterostomy for biliary atresia. The method utilizes the terminal ileum and right colon as the conduit and a Nisson-type plication to the area of the ileocecal valve. It was used in one patient.

Kasai portoenterostomy—new insights from hepatic morphology

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 2005
The aim of this paper was to investigate the mechanism of long-term biliary drainage after Kasai portoenterostomy by clinicopathologic study of hepatic morphology in explanted livers.Explanted livers from 13 consecutive children undergoing transplantation for biliary atresia were examined in detail using a standardized protocol.

Fatal Air Embolism Following Endoscopy of a Hepatic Portoenterostomy

Endoscopy, 1990
The case reported is that of a 10-year-old girl born with congenital biliary atresia who had undergone a Kasai procedure in the first year of life. The future role of hepatic portoenterostomy as treatment of biliary atresia

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1992
According to our recent study, 38 of 93 patients (40.9%) who underwent portoenterostomy at Juntendo University Hospital between 1977 and 1986 survived for more than 5 years. In order to learn the future improvement of the prognosis of biliary atresia patients who undergo portoenterostomy, we investigated the relationship between the prognosis of ...

Diagnosis and treatment of the febrile child following hepatic portoenterostomy

The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, 1985

Percutaneus transhepatic cholangiodrainage after hepatic portoenterostomy for biliary atresia

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1980
During the past 12 mo, percutaneous transhepatic cholangiodrainage (PTCD) was carried out in 9 infants (12 procedures) who had undergone hepatic portoenterostomy (8) and hepatic portocholecystostomy (1) for biliary atresia. Bile excretion following surgery was observed in all infants.

Hepatic function following portoenterostomy for extrahepatic biliary atresia

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1978
Liver structure and function in 10 patients with extrahepatic biliary atresia were studied after portoenteric anastomosis (Kasai operation). Bile flow adequate to reduce the serum bilirubin concentration was established in five patients (improved group), three of whom became anicteric. The serum bilirubin concentration did not decrease in the remaining

Portal hypertension after successful hepatic portoenterostomy in biliary atresia

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1986
From 1953 through 1984, we have operated on 225 cases of biliary atresia, and 95 patients are presently surviving. Portal hypertension with esophageal varices was endoscopically confirmed in 26 of 66 patients (39%) examined, 14 with and 52 without jaundice. All these patients except two had had frequent episodes of postoperative cholangitis.
