The Influence of Face Inversion and Spatial Frequency on the Self-Positive Expression Processing Advantage

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2018
Previous research has examined the impact of late self-evaluation, ignoring the impact of the early visual coding stage and the extraction of facial identity information and expression information on the self-positive expression processing advantage ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Comparison of two respiratory function monitors for newborn mask ventilation: A randomised crossover study using simulation

open access: yesResuscitation Plus
Objectives: Respiratory function monitors (RFM) provide objective feedback on respiratory parameters during face mask ventilation. While traditional RFMs display detailed waveforms, newer devices use simplified, colour-coded graphics. We aimed to compare

Culture Shock, Positive Face, and Negative Face: Being Polite in Tlaxcala [PDF]

open access: yesCentral Issues in Anthropology, 1980
Recent work on politeness by Lakoff (1973) and Brown and Levinson (1978) provides some underlying principles which allow us to provide an account of contrasting cultural styles which are often a source of major difficulties in cross‐cultural understanding.

Gary Bauer. Doing things right. Nashville, TN: Word Publishing, 2001. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Gary Bauer sought the Republican nomination for President in 2000, and this book Doing Things Right, is largely a result of that experience. As such, the tone of the book makes his stance on issues quite apparent, and reads very much like a long ...
