New intraoperative brachytherapy techniques for positive or close surgical margins

Journal of Surgical Oncology, 1989
AbstractTumors attached or adjacent to critical structures can often not be completely resected or resected with adequate surgical margins. Sites involving major blood vessels, the paravertebral spaces, or critical abdominal structures often present technical difficulties for standard brachytherapy procedures using 1‐125 or Ir‐192 implants.

The significance of “positive” margins in surgically resected epidermoid carcinomas

Head & Neck Surgery, 1978
AbstractSixty‐two patients with epidermoid carcinomas of the head and neck (excluding glottic larynx and skin), in whom surgical‐resection margins were classified as “positive,” were studied to determine the incidence of local recurrence, the subsequent clinical course, and survival.

Prognostic Value of Focal Positive Surgical Margins After Radical Prostatectomy

Clinical Genitourinary Cancer, 2016
The significance of focal positive margins (FPMs) after radical prostatectomy (RP) is unclear. Our objective was to investigate the prognostic value of FPMs in patients undergoing RP.The data were analyzed retrospectively for 1733 patients with clinically localized prostate cancer who had undergone RP at our institution from December 2003 to March 2014

Prognostic Significance of Positive Surgical Margins in Radical Prostatectomy Specimens

Journal of Urology, 1995
The prognostic significance of positive surgical margins in radical prostatectomy specimens was assessed. The interval to progression (increasing prostate specific antigen level) was measured in 478 patients by status of the surgical margins. At 5 years, the nonprogression rate was 64% for patients with and 83% for those without positive surgical margins.

Management of Positive Surgical Margins Following Radical Prostatectomy

2011
The widespread use of prostate specific antigen (PSA) for prostate cancer screening has significantly increased the number of patients diagnosed with the disease. Currently, approximately 90% of patients over 50 years of age with prostate cancer have clinically localized disease.1 Although several treatment options (i.e., external radiotherapy ...

SURGICAL MODIFICATIONS OF RADICAL RETROPUBIC PROSTATECTOMY TO DECREASE INCIDENCE OF POSITIVE SURGICAL MARGINS

The Journal of Urology, 1998
We sought to determine whether recent surgical modifications in the technique of radical retropubic prostatectomy decrease the incidence of positive surgical margins. We reviewed the records of 144 consecutive patients a mean of 60.8 years old who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy using a modified surgical technique.

Do Margins Matter? The Influence of Positive Surgical Margins on Prostate Cancer–Specific Mortality

European Urology, 2014
Positive surgical margins (PSMs) in radical prostatectomy (RP) specimens are a frequent indication for adjuvant radiotherapy and are used as a measure of surgical quality. However, the association between PSMs and prostate cancer-specific mortality (CSM) is poorly defined.Analyze the association of PSMs with CSM, adjusting for fixed and time-dependent ...
