‘Possible For’ and ‘Possible That’

Canadian Journal of Philosophy, 1981
In this century, much of the discussion of the free will problem has centered around the conditional analysis of ‘can’. Following G.E. Moore, most compatibilists have based their position on the supposition that to say a person could have acted otherwise is simply to say that he would have acted otherwise, if he had chosen (or willed) to.

The Possibility of Possibility

Journal of Economic Studies, 1985
It is now over 35 years since Professor Shackle published his masterly Expectation in Economics, therein formalising and synthesising his innovative work of the previous decade. Since then, though in varying degrees, controversy has raged over the relevance of his ideas for economic theory, and over the relevance of economic theory for economic life.

Possible People

Bioethics, 1988
Abstract 5.1 Can we have duties to people who will never actually exist? That the answer is ‘No’ has seemed obvious to many writers. I shall be arguing to the contrary that, where we have a choice between bringing someone into existence and not doing so, the interests of that possible person have to be con sidered.

The possibility of vagueness

Synthese, 2015

Possibility theory is discussed as an extension of probability theory arising from the need to express subjective information quantitatively in linguistic terms, but without the restrictions of probability numbers. The concept of fuzzy sets is introduced as the basis of possibility theory and the broad scope of applications is mentioned.

On The Possibility Of Possible Worlds

Canadian Journal of Philosophy, 1975
The notion of possible worlds — once an abstruse offspring of Leibnizian theology — seems to enjoy a new lease on life in the hands of contemporary modal logicians and semanticists. The phrase “possible world” crops up with increasing frequency, and, as it is the case with many philosophical catchwords, its very familarity creates a presumption of ...

Victory is Possible

Foreign Policy, 1980
Nuclear war is possible. But unlike Armageddon, the apocalyptic war prophesied to end history, nuclear war can have a wide range of possible outcomes. Many commentators and senior US government officials consider it a nonsurvivable event. The popularity of this view in Wasington has such a pervasive and malign effect upon American defense planning that

Possibility studies are an emerging field of research including topics as diverse as creativity, imagination, innovation, anticipation, counterfactual thinking, wondering ...
