Autonomic dysregulation is commonly comorbid and has been implicated in the underlying pathophysiology of both wake‐ and sleep‐related symptoms following trauma.

Insomnia Symptoms Co‐Fluctuate With Depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms From Pre‐ To 10 Years Post‐Deployment in Military Personnel

Journal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
In deployed military personnel, insomnia, PTSD and depression symptoms were strongly associated both between and within individuals over time. Symptoms tended to co‐fluctuate rather than predict one another, indicating that shared vulnerability factors may underlie these mental health outcomes.
