Detection and Identification of Viruses in Potatoes

2001
The early and accurate diagnosis of viral diseases is critical for effective management of most crop systems. Plant viruses are generally identified by symptoms, particle morphology, host range, serological properties and nucleic acid sequence. Symptoms are of major importance, because they are the main means by which a virus disease is diagnosed ...

Chilean potato germplasm with resistance to potato viruses Y and S

Euphytica, 1993
Four clones of the Chilota Potato Collection from the germplasm bank of the Universidad Austral de Chile, with potential combined resistance to PVX, PVY and PVS, were mechanically inoculated with these viruses in order to demonstrate wether they were truly resistant or not.

Aphid Transmission of Potato Viruses

2001
At least eight viruses can be spread by aphids in potato crops and have a critical role in the production of seed potatoes, Potato leafroll virus genus Polerovirus (PLRV), Potato virus Y genus Potyvirus (PVY), Potato virus A genus Potyvirus (PVA), Potato virus M genus Carlavirus (PVM), Potato virus S genus Carlavirus (PVS), Alfalfa mosaic virus genus ...

Transgenic potato plants resistant to viruses

Euphytica, 1992
Traditional potato breeding is a laborious process in which, by intercrossing, valuable traits from different parental clones are combined in a progeny genotype. Depending on the availability of genes, molecular techniques can be used to add specific genes to existing cultivars that, although otherwise satisfactory, lack a few commercially important ...

Translocation of the potato viruses YN and YO in some potato varieties

Potato Research, 1976
In experiments on the rate of translocation of the potato viruses YN and YO in the varieties Bintje, Eigenheimer, Dore and Sirtema it was found that both viruses infect tubers of Bintje much more readily than those of Eigenheimer. The tubers of the four varieties proved to be infected by PVYN to a higher degree than by PVYO.

Myzus ornatus a Vector of Potato Viruses

Nature, 1939
TOWARDS the end of 1932, aphids later identified as Myzus ornatus1 were found feeding on clover plants in a glasshouse at the Agricultural College, Glasnevin. The species has since been recorded on a wide host range which includes potatoes, a fact which prompted the carrying out of tests to ascertain the efficiency of this species as a vector of potato

Potato Viruses with Soil-borne Vectors

2001
Only general aspects on the biology of soil-borne vectors and their viruses relative to seed potato production will be addressed in this chapter. More detailed information on this topic can be found in several excellent review articles and texts published in recent years (Harrison, 1977; Trudgill et al. 1983; de Bokx and van der Want, 1987; Jones, 1988;
