Management of the Great Barrier Reef [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This inquiry examined the adequacy of the Australian and Queensland Governments’ efforts to stop the rapid decline of the Great Barrier Reef. Terms of reference On 25 March 2014, the Senate referred the following matter to the Environment and ...

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Rapid assessment of anemone and anemonefish populations at the Keppel Islands a report to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

open access: yes, 2009
This project was commissioned by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to address concerns that the abundance of anemonefishes and their host anemones at the Keppel Islands has declined significantly in recent years.

Heat Transfer Through Plasma-Sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings in Gas Turbines: A Review of Recent Work

open access: yes, 2009
A review is presented of how heat transfer takes place in plasma-sprayed (zirconia-based) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) during operation of gas turbines. These characteristics of TBCs are naturally of central importance to their function. Current state-

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for

Weak Barriers in Nonlinear Potential Theory

open access: yesPotential Analysis, 2007
In nonlinear potential theory, barriers have been used to characterize regular boundary points. Here the authors makes use of weak barriers for this purpose. The results also hold for \(\mathcal A\)-harmonic functions under the usual assumptions on \(\mathcal A\), and for Cheeger \(p\)-harmonic functions in metric spaces.

Quantum walk on the line through potential barriers [PDF]

open access: yesQuantum Information Processing, 2015
Quantum walks are well-known for their ballistic dispersion, traveling $Θ(t)$ away in $t$ steps, which is quadratically faster than a classical random walk's diffusive spreading. In physical implementations of the walk, however, the particle may need to tunnel through a potential barrier to hop, and a naive calculation suggests this could eliminate the

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...
