An investigation into the use of balance in operational numerical weather prediction

open access: yes, 2011
Presented in this study is a wide-ranging investigation into the use of properties of balance in an operational numerical weather prediction context. Initially, a joint numerical and observational study is undertaken.

Mechanisms of the QBO Influence on the Tropical Troposphere: Modulation by ENSO Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 13, 16 July 2026.
Abstract The Quasi‐Biennial Oscillation (QBO) is the dominant mode of tropical stratospheric variability that can influence tropospheric circulation and convection. El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is the primary source of interannual variability in the tropical troposphere, can modulate both the QBO and its impact on the tropical troposphere.

Interaction between two quasi-geostrophic vortices of unequal potential vorticity

open access: yes, 2008
In this paper we systematically investigate strong interactions between two like-signed quasi-geostrophic vortices containing different uniform potential vorticity.

High resolution numerical study of the Algiers 2001 flash flood: sensitivity to the upper-level potential vorticity anomaly [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Geosciences, 2006
From 9 to 11 November 2001, intense cyclogenesis affected the northern coasts of Africa and more particularly the densely populated city of Algiers.

Past Global Warming Influence on Intense Typhoons Reaching Southern China During El Niño and La Niña Using a Variable Resolution Global Model

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, Volume 27, Issue 7, July 2026.
Warming shifted westward tracks northwards toward Guangdong, and concentrated curved tracks over the Yangtze River mouth. It is therefore possible that the perceived increased typhoon damage in recent years may be due to intense typhoon tracks shifting to more populated and economically important regions.

Local Polynomial Regression and Filtering for a Versatile Mesh‐Free PDE Solver

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, Volume 98, Issue 7, Page 804-839, July 2026.
A high‐order, mesh‐free finite difference method for solving differential equations is presented. Both derivative approximation and scheme stabilisation is carried out by parametric or non‐parametric local polynomial regression, making the resulting numerical method accurate, simple and versatile. Numerous numerical benchmark tests are investigated for

Identifying stratospheric ozone intrusion events in Nanjing, China

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Communications
Stratospheric ozone (O _3 ) intrusion events (SIE) have been recognized as significant contributors to ground-level O _3 pollution. Nanjing, characterized by complex terrain and strong synoptic variability, underwent significant atmospheric changes ...

Formulation of Peptide‐Based Nanoparticles Using a Microfluidic Device

open access: yesJournal of Peptide Science, Volume 32, Issue 7, July 2026.
A case study using the TAMARA microfluidic device (Inside Therapeutics) was performed for peptide‐based nanoparticles under different operational parameters such as mixing channel geometry, total flow rate, and flow rate ratio. In this context, WRAP5 cell‐penetrating peptide‐based nanoparticles for siRNA or pDNA delivery demonstrated enhanced ...

Destruction of Potential Vorticity by Winds

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 2005
Abstract The destruction of potential vorticity (PV) at ocean fronts by wind stress–driven frictional forces is examined using PV flux formalism and numerical simulations. When a front is forced by “downfront” winds, that is, winds blowing in the direction of the frontal jet, a nonadvective frictional PV flux that is upward at the sea ...

A retrospective on the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season

open access: yesWeather, Volume 81, Issue 7, Page 224-232, July 2026.
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season was intermittent, with extended quiet periods separated by three clusters of activity. The broad‐scale conditions were often unfavourable for cyclogenesis and common drivers of activity such as La Niña were weak, but well above‐average sea temperatures still supported intense storms.
