Potential Vorticity as Meridional Coordinate

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2007
Abstract The dynamical equations of atmospheric flow are written using potential vorticity as the meridional coordinate and potential temperature as the vertical coordinate. Within this system, the atmosphere is divided into undulating tubes bounded by isentropic and constant potential vorticity surfaces, and, under adiabatic and ...

Potential Vorticity in Hurricane Gloria

Monthly Weather Review, 1995
Abstract Potential vorticity (PV) analysts for Hurricane Gloria of 1985 are derived from nested objective wind analyses of Omega dropwindsonde and airborne Doppler radar data. The analyses resolve eyewall-scale features in the inner vortex core and embed analyses of these features within the larger-scale environment.

Potential Vorticity Inversion on a Hemisphere

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2000
Abstract Several different kinds of accurate potential vorticity (PV) inversion operators, and the associated balanced models, are tested for the shallow water equations on a hemisphere in an attempt to approach the ultimate limitations of the balance, inversion, and slow-manifold concepts.

Rotation and Potential Vorticity

2003
For motions whose time scales are of the order of a day or greater, or more precisely when the frequency of the wave motion is of the order of the Coriolis parameter or less, the effects of the Earth’s rotation can no longer be ignored. Such waves are evident in both oceanic and atmospheric observational spectra.

On Potential Vorticity and Transport in the Stratosphere

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1977
Abstract An attempt is made to relate tracer transport in the stratosphere to the requirements of atmospheric dynamics. The relationships are illustrated by considering the observed transport and budget of potential vorticity in the Southern Hemisphere.

Potential vorticity and the PV perspective

Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, 2014
This paper highlights some theoretical aspects of potential vorticity (PV) and discusses some of the insights the PV perspective has given us. The topics covered include the nature of PV, its controlling role in the symmetric stability of the atmosphere, its inversion to give the flow field, Rossby waves and their coupling to give baroclinic ...

Neutral-surface potential vorticity

Progress in Oceanography, 1988
Abstract The use of potential density in ocean models does not overcome all the annoying problems caused by the compressible nature of seawater. For example, the reduced gravity for layered ocean models is not proportional to the difference of potential density across an interface.

An Alternative Form for Potential Vorticity

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1994
Abstract A form of potential vorticity is described that has conservation properties similar to those of Ertel's potential vorticity (EPV) but removes the exponential variation with height displayed by EPV. This form is thus more suitable for inspecting vertical cross sections of potential vorticity and for use (with potential temperature) as a quasi ...
