Potential Vorticity Hydraulics
2007To this point we have dwelt with applications in which the velocity of the current is comparable with the speed of long, internal gravity waves. This situation can arise in channels, along coastlines, in the lee of mountains, or in other special locations, but is less likely to occur in the relatively slow and broad general circulation of the ocean or ...

Potential vorticities in semi-geostrophic theory
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1996AbstractA family of kinematically possible motions in shallow‐water versions of semi‐geostrophic theory is devised, with variable Coriolis parameter, for which two distinct measures of potential vorticity take the same value. Conditions are described for which this value is conserved following the actual motion of a particle. The results are related to

Sensitivity to potential vorticity
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1998AbstractA new method is proposed that computes the sensitivity to potential vorticity of any diagnosed aspect of the atmosphere. It does not require the computation of the adjoint of the full inversion procedure, but rather the tangent linear and the adjoint of the operator that relates the wind and mass fields to the distribution of potential ...

Relativistic potential vorticity
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. A. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1984Abstract Inviscid fluids in classical mechanics preserve the value of the potential vorticity ρ-1∇ x u• ∇s on each fluid element. The conservation law is a local expression of Kelvin’s circulation theorem. These results are generalised to inviscid flows in general relativity.

Multidimensional Solitons and Vortices in Periodic Potentials
2006The existence of stable solitons and localized vortices in two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) media governed by the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a periodic potential is demonstrated by means of the variational approximation (VA) and in direct simulations. In the 2D case, multi-mode (hexagonal, triangular, and quasi-periodic) potentials

The omega equation and potential vorticity
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2003AbstractTwo fundamental perspectives on the dynamics of midlatitude weather systems are provided by potential vorticity (PV) and the omega equation. The aim of this paper is to investigate the link between the two perspectives, which has so far received very little attention in the meteorological literature.

Negative potential vorticity lenses
International Journal of Engineering Science, 1992Abstract The dynamical properties of inviscid fluid lenses, which rotate faster than the local Coriolis, were studied through numerical experiments. Such lenses have negative potential vorticity and generally require nonlinear dynamical balances. A solution scheme was used that preserved exactly the relevant nonlinearity of the Euler equations.

Potential Vorticity in Hurricane Gloria
Monthly Weather Review, 1995Abstract Potential vorticity (PV) analysts for Hurricane Gloria of 1985 are derived from nested objective wind analyses of Omega dropwindsonde and airborne Doppler radar data. The analyses resolve eyewall-scale features in the inner vortex core and embed analyses of these features within the larger-scale environment.

Potential Vorticity Inversion on a Hemisphere
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2000Abstract Several different kinds of accurate potential vorticity (PV) inversion operators, and the associated balanced models, are tested for the shallow water equations on a hemisphere in an attempt to approach the ultimate limitations of the balance, inversion, and slow-manifold concepts.
