The word potentiometer originally meant a device for measuring electric potential differences. Later, it also was applied to a tapped resistance used as a voltage divider. Although the measuring instrument is no longer used in undergraduate labs, it is the only truly perfect voltmeter, drawing no current and thus appearing to have an infinite impedance.

The instrument described is intended to combine sensitivity with a large range of temperature for thermocouple measurements. The principle of the method is to oppose the E.M.F of the couple by one nearly equal, thus enabling a millivoltmeter to be read directly in ranges of 100° C. between - 100° C. and + 1200° C.
