Ensemble Kalman filter in latent space using a variational autoencoder pair

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The use of the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) in strongly nonlinear or constrained atmospheric, oceanographic, or sea‐ice models can be challenging. Applying the EnKF in the latent space of a variational autoencoder (VAE) ensures that the ensemble members satisfy the balances and constraints present in the model.

Element signature analysis: its validation as a tool for geographic authentication of the origin of dried beef and poultry meat [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Element concentrations of 56 poultry meat and 53 dried beef samples were determined and statistically analyzed using analysis of variance and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to identify the single or combination of elements with the highest potential ...

Long‐term remission in gout: Challenges and future opportunities

open access: yesRheumatology &Autoimmunity, EarlyView.
Prolonged hyperuricemia is a major risk factor for gout, which is now regarded as a curable disease. Awareness of the various factors that can trigger gout flares is essential for their prevention. An important determinant of treatment decisions and long‐term follow‐up is the quality of the clinician–patient relationship. The “treat‐to‐target” approach

The food balance dynamics of the poultry meat

open access: yes, 2016
The paper performs an analysis of the food balance evolution for poultry meat, taking into account the internal production, imports, exports, consumption levels for this food product. Thus, the food balance had a favourable evolution in the recent years,

Strategic Design of Public Food Procurement to Leverage Positive Food Systems Outcomes: A Framework of Actions

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT There is substantial potential for the procurement of food by public institutions to contribute to Sustainable Development across multiple environmental, social, and economic outcomes. In this study we used theories of policy instrumentation and learning to analyse global guidance for designing public food procurement instruments to leverage ...

Economic Assessment of Food Safety Regulations: The New Approach to Meat and Poultry Inspection [PDF]

open access: yes
USDA is now requiring all Federally inspected meat and poultry processing and slaughter plants to implement a new system called Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) to reduce potentially harmful microbial pathogens in the food supply. This

Energy and environmental burdens of organic and non-organic agriculture and horticulture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Production of 10 major commodities in England and Wales was studied using Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). Organic and non-organic (contemporary conventional) systems were compared.
