Solving Complex Zeolite Structures from Powder Diffraction Data

open access: yesCHIMIA, 2001
To understand the technologically important properties of zeolites and their analogs, structure analysis is essential. However, most new zeolites are prepared in polycrystalline form, so powder diffraction methods of structure solution must be ...

Raman Spectroscopic Identification of Oxide Phases in a Corroded MgO–Steel Composite Anode Used in Aluminum Molten Salt Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Micro‐Raman spectroscopy is applied to characterize corrosion products in a recycled‐based MgO–316L steel composite anode after molten salt electrolysis. A depth‐dependent Fe–O/Fe–Al–O layer sequence of magnetite, hercynite, and an Al‐doped magnetite transition zone is identified.

Carbon Concentration Dependence of the Superconducting Transition Temperature and Structure of MgCxNi3

open access: yes, 2001
The crystal structure of the superconductor MgCxNi3 is reported as a function of carbon concentration determined by powder neutron diffraction. The single-phase perovskite structure was found in only a narrow range of carbon content, 0.88 < x < 1.0.

Powder diffraction basis

open access: yesMaterials Today, 2004
Abstract Vitalij K. Pecharsky and Peter Y. Zavalij provide an excellent introduction to structure determination using powder diffraction in their new book, which also gives an insight into the world of the crystallographer, says Mark S. Angelone .

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Interaction of MgO Recyclate‐Based Cermet Anode With KF‐AlF3‐Al2O3 at 800°C During Laboratory Scale Aluminum Molten Salt Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A carbon‐free, as‐sintered MgO–steel cermet anode, fabricated via cold isostatic pressing using MgO–C refractory recyclate, was evaluated under laboratory‐scale K‐cryolite electrolysis at 800°C. Operation at this reduced temperature, combined with the electrolyte's limited electrical conductivity, led to an increase in cell voltage.

High Temperature Phase Stability in Li0.12Na0.88NbO3: A Combined powder X-Ray and Neutron Diffraction Study

open access: yes, 2015
Lithium doped sodium niobate is an ecofriendly piezoelectric material that exhibits a variety of structural phase transitions with composition and temperature. We have investigated the phase stabilities of an important composition Li0.12Na0.88NbO3 (LNN12)

Sub-nanosecond X-ray powder diffraction

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, 1990
The X-rays emitted from a laser-produced plasma have been used to obtain powder diffraction patterns with exposures of less than a nanosecond. The X-rays were produced by focusing approximately 50 J of 0.53 μm laser light in a 600 ps (FWHM) pulse to a tight (~100 μm diameter) spot on a solid titanium target.

Impact of Sustainable Binders Based on Lignin and Collagen on the Volume Stability and Mechanical Properties of MgO‐C Refractories with MgO‐C Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.
