eduSTAT—Automated Workflows for the Analysis of Small- to Medium-Sized Datasets

open access: yesStats
This communication provides a citable methodological reference for eduSTAT (v1), an automated, rule-based workflow for the statistical analysis of small- to medium-sized datasets (N≈30–3000).

Measuring the Crowd Within Again: A Pre-registered Replication Study

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2014
According to the crowd within effect, the average of two estimates from one person tends to be more accurate than a single estimate of that person. The effect implies that the well documented wisdom of the crowd effect - the crowd's average estimate ...

Emerging experimental and computational methods for studying redox‐regulated structural transitions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Redox reactions can reshape proteins and alter how they behave in cells, with important consequences for health and disease. This review explores emerging experimental and computational approaches for discovering these redox‐sensitive protein switches, revealing their structural effects, and predicting their behavior, opening new opportunities to ...

Balancing data needs in pedestrian dynamics experiments: crowd size, number of trials, and trial duration

open access: yesActa Polytechnica CTU Proceedings
Determining the required data for pedestrian dynamics studies is essential but complex. Researchers need to decide on (1) the number of participants required per trial (i.e., the crowd size) and (2) the number of observations needed for robust results ...

Evaluation of camera placement for detection of free‐ranging carnivores; implications for assessing population changes

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, 2020
1. Introduced carnivores are often cryptic, making it difficult to quantify their presence in ecosystems, and assess how this varies in relation to management interventions. Survey design should thus seek to improve detectability and maximize statistical

Synergistic perspectives—How single‐molecule biophysics complement biochemical understanding

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how ensemble biochemistry and single‐molecule approaches are complementary, outline commonly used single‐molecule techniques, and illustrate their relevance through two representative case studies: chromatin organization by SMC complexes and pathway choice during DNA double‐strand break repair.

Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.

A General Framework for Planning the Number of Items/Subjects for Evaluating Cronbach’s Alpha: Integration of Hypothesis Testing and Confidence Intervals

open access: yesMethodology
Cronbach’s alpha, widely used for measuring reliability, often operates within studies with sample information, suffering insufficient sample sizes to have sufficient statistical power or precise estimation.
