Regulation of the spectral peak in gamma-ray bursts

open access: yes, 2012
Observations indicate that the peak of gamma-ray burst spectrum forms in the opaque region of an ultra-relativistic jet. Recent radiative transfer calculations support this picture and show that the spectral peak is inherited from initially thermal ...

Beam-powered lunar rover design [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Manned exploration of our nearest neighbors in the solar systems is the primary goal of the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). An integral part of any manned lunar or planetary outpost will be a system for manned excursions over the surface of the planet. This report presents a preliminary design for a lunar rover capable of supporting four astronauts

Unidirectional Tape‐Based Composites from Hemp and Pineapple Leaf Fiber: Mechanical Performance in Conventional and Bio‐Based Matrices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The study investigates novel semi‐finished products made of unidirectionally arranged hemp or pineapple leaf fiber‐reinforced composites produced from different matrices. The materials are analyzed in terms of their mechanical and interfacial properties and void content.

Nitride‐Reinforced Metal Matrix Nanocomposite Powders Production by Plasma‐Assisted Thermochemical Treatment of Intermetallic Powders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes a new methodology for producing metal matrix nanocomposites in the solid state. The process involves the plasma‐assisted thermochemical treatment of metallic alloy powders. As a proof‐of‐concept, TiN nanoparticles are synthesized directly on the surface of FeTi intermetallic powder particles, enabling the development of the ...

A Framework for Iterative Phase Retrieval Technique Integration into Atmospheric Adaptive Optics—Part II: High Resolution Wavefront Control in Strong Scintillations

open access: yesPhotonics
In this paper, we introduce atmospheric adaptive optics (AO) system architectures that utilize scintillation-resistant wavefront sensors based on iterative phase retrieval (IPR) techniques (described in detail in Part I) for closed-loop mitigation of ...

Adaptive optics for laser power beaming [PDF]

open access: yes
It has been proposed to use a high energy pulsed laser to beam power into space for satellites or a lunar base. The effects of atmospheric transmission are critical to such a system. Thermal blooming in the atmosphere can cause the beam to spread rapidly.

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.
