Evaluation of materials for WTR-insulated power cables

IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, 2000
In order to improve the resistance to water treeing of standard crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation used in medium voltage power cables, a number of materials were selected and studied that represent different water tree growth prevention strategies: (a) using materials with crystallinity and morphology different from that of XLPE, or (b) using ...

System management strategy to monitor insulated power cables

Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE Industry Applications Conference, 2004. 39th IAS Annual Meeting., 2004
For the operation programs and preventive maintenance a fundamental focus is to monitor the efficiency of components of a distribution system. A right goal for the maintenance is the evaluation of synthetic parameters suitable to furnish, after each measuring time interval, the updated check up of the maintaining components.

Evaluating the Service Degradation of Insulated Power Cables

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1982
There exists no proven and reliable method to accurately evaluate ranaining life of an insulation when a premature service failure occurs, particularly in the case of direct buried polyethylene and crosslinked polyethylene primary cables.

Low frequency ultrasound NDT of power cable insulation

2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings, 2014
Ultrasound technology is a very well-known effective technique used in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Of the advantages, one can name its relatively low cost and that it is safe. At high frequencies it offers the capability of generating high resolution imagery.

The dielectric insulation of superconducting power cables

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1991
The operating requirements of superconducting cable systems are discussed, and the low-temperature dielectric properties of various gases, liquids and solids are presented. The design and testing of large cables with both helium and nitrogen cooling, using these data, is described.

Space charge accumulation in power cable XLPE insulation

IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, 1999
The accumulation of space charge in the crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation of a power cable sample under dc stress was investigated. The sample was held at 82/spl deg/C and atmospheric pressure, and at 82/spl deg/C and 0.1 Pa, for periods up to several days.

High-voltage rubber-insulated submarine power cables

Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1953
Submarine power cables in the United States are frequently made with rubber insulation for voltages up to 35 kV phase-to-phase. The choice of rubber rather than oil-impregnated paper, and the elimination of the lead sheath, is usually governed by physical and chemical conditions rather than cost.

Discharge Detection in Extruded Polyethylene Insulated Power Cables

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1967
An analytical study was made of the separator-filter type of discharge detector circuit when connected to long cable lengths during corona measurements of polyethylene insulated power cables. Based on this study, it is indicated how optimum detector and connecting circuit parameters can be chosen to best advantage when this type of detection equipment ...

Ageing characteristics of paper-insulated power cables

Power Engineering Journal, 1990
Most of the underground distribution cable in use in the United Kingdom is insulated by windings of paper tape which are impregnated with compounds of oil, wax and resin, in various proportions. The structure of this type of insulation is expected to deteriorate with time so that, even if the cable is mechanically undisturbed, the insulation may ...

EAM insulation for medium-volt power cable applications

Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation, 2005
Traditionally, medium-volt (MV) power cable producers had two choices for insulation. These broad categories are cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and ethylene-propylene rubber (EP), and include all of their variations, such as tree-resistant XLPE (TRXLPE), ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR), ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM), etc.
