Fault location techniques for simultaneous faults in power distribution systems with distributed generations

2017 International Energy and Sustainability Conference (IESC), 2017
Modern electric power systems are witnessing deployment of an increasing number of distributed renewable energy resources. Reliability of grid infrastructure plays a key role in increased use of renewable energies. Fault management is a key function in reducing outage time and increasing system reliability.

Generalized method for fault simulations in power systems

European Transactions on Electrical Power, 2000
AbstractThis paper presents a new generalized method of modelling of any kind of shunt and series faults as single or simultaneous faults in arbitrary combination. The proposed approach can be used for conventional fault studies for the steady‐state model based on the nodal admittance representation as well as for fault simulations under transient ...

An analysis of open-phase fault in power generation station

2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS), 2016
This paper attempts to investigate and analyze the electrical characteristics present on the power grid when an open-phase event occurs at an off-site transformer. In order to conduct such task, this paper uses transformer, load, and connection data obtained from a real power plant to simulate several different power system configurations and analyzes ...

Fault-Tolerant Multiphase Electric Generator Integrated in the Power Plant of an Aircraft

2021 Sixteenth International Conference on Ecological Vehicles and Renewable Energies (EVER), 2021
In this paper, a fault simulation of a six-phase fault-tolerant generator has been carried out. The simulation results show that an increase in the number of faulty phases leads to an increase in the ripple of the rectified current and voltage on the load.

Location of faults in power cables by fault-generated surges

2012
The object of this research is to develop a satisfactory method for locating high-impedance faults in underground cables. Most methods of locating faults require that the fault-impedance be reduced to a low value before the measurement can be made. After a careful investigation of the available literature, it was decided that the most desirable method ...

Blade Faults Diagnosis in Power Generation Gas Turbines

Volume 2: I&C, Digital Controls, and Influence of Human Factors; Plant Construction Issues and Supply Chain Management; Plant Operations, Maintenance, Aging Management, Reliability and Performance; Renewable Energy Systems: Solar, Wind, Hydro and Geothermal; Risk Management, Safety and Cyber Security; Steam Turbine-Generators, Electric Generators, Transformers, Switchgear, and Electric BOP and Auxiliaries; Student Competition; Thermal Hydraulics and Computational Fluid Dynamics, 2017
This paper presents a case study in managing the dilemma of whether to resume or stop the operation of a power generation gas turbine with suspected blade faults. Vibration analysis is undertaken on the vibration signal of the gas turbine, to obtain an insight into the health condition of the blades before any decision is made on the operation of the ...

Risk evaluation of coupling fault for power generation equipment

2011 International Conference on Quality, Reliability, Risk, Maintenance, and Safety Engineering, 2011
Risk assessment is an important basis for maintenance decision-making. Based on the reliability analysis, trend prediction and condition evaluation, the paper defines a new running vulnerability, proposes a new analysis method of coupling faults consequence, and builds a risk evaluation model of power generation equipment.

MV Generator Ground Fault Arcing Power Damage Assessment

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2017
An industrial medium voltage (MV) system usually consists of multiple power sources such as utility tie transformers and generators. These are normally low-resistance grounding as shown in Fig. 1 . When a ground fault occurs at the generator stator, ground currents from its own neutral circuit and external power sources will flow into the fault and ...

Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis of Generators in Power Networks

2019 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2019
In this paper, a novel hierarchical signal processing methodology is proposed for generator condition monitoring and fault diagnosis based on raw electrical waveform data in power networks, which can often be measured by strategically-located waveform sensors.

General-purpose fault detection for pulsed power applications

Conference Record of the 2000 Twenty-fourth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2000
A general-purpose electronic fault detection system has been designed for use with pulsed power experiments. Intended for use with a repetitively pulsed system, the fault detection electronics have the ability to shut down operations in the event of a fault, which would lead to damage if subsequent shots were allowed to proceed.
