#Outage: Detecting Power and Communication Outages from Social Networks [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of The Web Conference 2020, 2020
Natural disasters are increasing worldwide at an alarming rate. To aid relief operations during and post disaster, humanitarian organizations rely on various types of situational information such as missing, trapped or injured people and damaged infrastructure in an area.

Resiliency evaluation of a collective residence with an independent power outage system

open access: yesJapan Architectural Review, 2023
This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of a 48‐h independent power outage system, evaluate the indoor thermal environment under power outage conditions, and improve residential awareness of disasters through a power outage experience.

Power allocation for estimation outage minimization with secrecy outage constraints [PDF]

open access: yes2016 Australian Communications Theory Workshop (AusCTW), 2016
In this paper, we investigate the distortion outage minimization problem for a wireless sensor network (WSN) in the presence of an eavesdropper. The observation signals transmitted from the sensors to the fusion center (FC) are over-heard by the eavesdropper.

A Strategy for judging real-time and active reporting outage based on the power consumption information acquisition system

open access: yesEnergy Reports, 2021
To optimize the energy structure, smart grids are constructed rapidly. The optimization of the power consumption information acquisition system helps to eliminate outages caused by device quality failures, and makes the processing of outages more ...

Revisiting and Modeling Power-Law Distributions in Empirical Outage Data of Power Systems

open access: yesPRX Energy, 2023
The size distributions of planned and forced outages and their restoration times in power systems have been studied for almost two decades and have drawn great interest as they display heavy tails.

A Power Control Algorithm Based on Outage Probability Awareness in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

open access: yesAdvances in Multimedia, 2018
This paper addresses the problem of adaptive power control based on outage probability minimization in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), called a Power Control Algorithm Based on Outage Probability Awareness (PC-OPA). Unlike most of the existing works,

Load dependence of power outage statistics [PDF]

open access: yesEPL (Europhysics Letters), 2019
The size distributions of power outages are shown to depend on the stress, or the proximity of the load of an electrical grid to complete breakdown. Using the data for the U.S. between 2002-2017, we show that the outage statistics are dependent on the usage levels during different hours of the day and months of the year.

Power outages and economic growth in Africa [PDF]

open access: yesEnergy Economics, 2013
Abstract This paper estimates the total effect of power outages on economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa over the period 1995–2007. We pay close attention both to potential errors of measurement of African economic growth and to the endogeneity of outages. As suggested by Henderson et al.
