An Illustration of the Power of Structure Theory

Applied Categorical Structures, 2000
This article contains a sampling of applications of the theory of compact topological semigroups to diverse branches of mathematics. The theory of compact semigroups with one-sided continuity can be used effectively in Ramsey theory; this is illustrated with a semigroup proof of van der Waerden's theorem on arithmetic progressions.

Predictive Power Theory

1976
Mulder’s ‘Game for Power’, published in [1], has been fully formalized in [2] according to a method originated by Popper. We exploit this psychological theory further. Our results pertain to an overall analysis of the theory, whereby encompassing computer-simulation.

Powers of Theory

1985
Existing theories of the nature of the state in Western capitalist democracies have been mostly propounded from one of three major theoretical perspectives, each emphasising a particular aspect of the state: the 'pluralist', which emphasises its democratic aspect: the 'managerial', which emphasises its bureaucratic elements: and the 'class', which ...

Explanatory Power and Nursing Theory

Nursing Science Quarterly, 2020
A theme of this article is the theory-research link and its essential role in advancing nursing science and practice. Concern is expressed over the current status of nursing theory relative to the advances in research and practice. Soon-to-be and current theoreticians and scientists are encouraged to champion not just nursing theory proper but ...

The Social Distance Theory of Power

Personality and Social Psychology Review, 2013
We propose that asymmetric dependence between individuals (i.e., power) produces asymmetric social distance, with high-power individuals feeling more distant than low-power individuals. From this insight, we articulate predictions about how power affects (a) social comparison, (b) susceptibility to influence, (c) mental state inference and ...

On theories categorical in their own power

Journal of Symbolic Logic, 1971
A theory T is said to be categorical in power κ iff T has a model of power κ and any two models of power κ are isomorphic. It was conjectured by Morley [4] that if T is a theory in a language with κ > ω symbols and T is categorical in power κ, then T has a model of power < κ. The aim of this paper is to prove the following theorem.Theorem A. Let κ

Theories of Optical Rotatory Power

Reviews of Modern Physics, 1937
By optical rotatory power is meant the property of a medium to rotate the plane of polarization of linearly polarized light that is transmitted through it. The first effect of this kind was discovered by Arago in 1811. He found that quartz had this property in the direction of the optical axis, the direction along with ordinary double refraction ...

On the Theory of Optical Rotatory Power

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1937
The Born theory of optical activity in quantum-mechanical form is simplified with the aid of certain approximations. It leads to a simple expression for the rotatory parameter of an active molecule in terms of the geometrical configuration and the polarizability tensors of its constituent groups. Optical anisotropy of the component groups and inhibited

Theory in Progress: Dyadic Power Theory: Constructing a Communication-Based Theory of Relational Power

Journal of Family Communication, 2004
Power is an integral part of any relationship, especially close familial relationships, because it determines how the partners relate to each other and how decisions are made. Rollins and Bahr's (1976) theory of power in marital relationships, referred to here as Dyadic Power Theory, is expanded to consider communication behavior, and to include other ...
