Reflections on Adoption of New Agricultural Practices

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Research on adoption of new practices, technologies and systems in agriculture has generated thousands of publications over the past 70 years, covering uptake of agricultural practices spanning more than 100 years. This paper contains selected key lessons from the results of this enormous research effort, drawn from numerous reviews of the ...

Drivers of Mouse Plagues: Exceptional Rainfall Following Prolonged Drought Triggers Mouse Plagues in Southeastern Australia

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This study identified a specific sequence of an extended drought followed by exceptional rainfall as a necessary precursor for mouse plagues in southeastern Australia. Long‐term rainfall anomalies interact with ecological processes to reset population dynamics, creating conditions that support rapid mouse population growth following periods of ...

CP32, a novel anti‐oomycete cyclic peptide, interferes with cell‐wall deposition in Phytophthora infestans

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
The small cyclic peptide CP32 effectively inhibits Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of potato and tomato late blight. Combined biochemical and phenotypic analyses demonstrate that CP32 disrupts cell wall biosynthesis, a key process in pathogen infection, resulting in a marked reduction of disease symptoms in plants.

Saffron Crocus sativus L. tolerance to some herbicides

open access: yesJournal of Crop Protection, 2020
Although, weed control in saffron farms is critical, no herbicide is registered for saffron fields. This experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates during 2016-2017.

The Capital–Labour–State Dynamics of Herbicide Adoption in Rainfed India

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper engages debates around the capital–labour–state dynamics of agrarian transitions to address the oft‐studied but still little‐understood question of why farmers adopt herbicides when they do. Over the last several years, smallholder farmers in India have begun using the herbicide bispyribac sodium at breakneck speeds, particularly in

Residual herbicides in Roundup Ready soybean: A case study in multiple years and locations with Ipomoea triloba

open access: yesCiência e Agrotecnologia
The evolution of glyphosate-resistant and -tolerant weeds has caused changes in weed management around the world. Residual herbicides are crucial tools for weed management, but the rate of adoption by soybean growers remains very low in Brazil.

Dependent Articulation in the Global Pesticide Complex: Argentina's Agrochemical Industry After the Generics Market Revolution

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Since the late 1990s, the pesticide industry has undergone a ‘generics revolution’ as the centre of production, and trade has shifted to the global South. China and India have become major producers, capturing Latin American markets from Northern multinationals. As a major pesticide user and a key node in global supply chains, Argentina offers

Pesticide Supply Chains From China to Australia: Examining Paraquat Amid the Global Pesticide Complex

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Following recent calls to deepen understanding of the Global Pesticide Complex, this article delves into the China‐to‐Australia supply chain of a single herbicide—paraquat. First released in the United Kingdom in the 1960s, acutely toxic paraquat is now primarily produced in China.

Protecting While Promoting? The Limits of Agroindustry‐Driven Pesticide Safety in Ugandan Smallholder Agriculture

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pesticide use is expanding rapidly across sub‐Saharan Africa, while regulatory oversight and public protection structures remain weak, leaving smallholder farmers exposed to mounting health and environmental risks. In response, agrochemical industry actors have launched ‘safe use’ initiatives that emphasize training and personal protective ...
