Pre-exposure prophylaxis in the perinatal period
The Lancet HIVWomen in sub-Saharan Africa are at high risk for HIV acquisition during pregnancy and postpartum periods, which puts the health of perinatal people at risk, but also contributes to new paediatric infections. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV is a highly effective intervention to prevent HIV acquisition.

The Lancet HIV, 2015The Editorial in the April issue, Antiretroival gels: facing the FACTS, describes the HIV community’s collective disappointment regarding the FACTS trial’s negative results. However, the conclusions that gels are not “practically feasible” and vaginal rings may be the “usable prevention strategy” that women need is misguided.
