The crystal structure of the Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase BBE22 resolves a long‐standing annotation error

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase (PncA/BBE22) reveals the correct full‐length protein initiated from a non‐canonical AUU start codon. The structure validates previous biochemical findings and resolves a long‐standing annotation error, demonstrating that the truncated database sequence is structurally incompatible with the ...

Correcting the optimally selected resampling-based error rate: A smooth analytical alternative to nested cross-validation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
High-dimensional binary classification tasks, e.g. the classification of microarray samples into normal and cancer tissues, usually involve a tuning parameter adjusting the complexity of the applied method to the examined data set.

Predictability of Mandibular Autorotation After Maxillary Repositioning in Orthognathic Surgery: A Systematic Review with Exploratory Quantitative Synthesis

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This systematic review aimed to evaluate the available evidence on methods used to predict mandibular autorotation after maxillary repositioning in orthognathic surgery. A systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Google Scholar, and

Predicting Errors in Concurrent Systems

open access: yes, 2017

Directed evolution of enzymes at the crossroads of tradition and innovation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An iterative cycle of data‐driven enzyme optimization comprising four stages: genetic diversification of a template enzyme, expression of protein variants, high‐throughput evaluation, and machine‐learning‐guided redesign of the next variant library.

Choosing a Model and Strategy of Model Selection by Accumulated Prediction Error [PDF]

open access: yes
The purpose of the paper is to present and apply the accumulative one-step-ahead prediction error (APE) not only as a method (strategy) of model selection, but also as a tool of model selection strategy (meta-selection).

Treatment with KCL‐286, a first‐in‐class retinoic acid receptor‐β (RARβ) agonist, ameliorates neuronal DNA damage and inflammation in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Repair of neuronal DNA damage in Alzheimer's disease by KCL‐286. (A) Amyloid‐β oligomers and plaques impair neuronal DNA repair pathways, leading to DNA double‐strand breaks and glial activation. (B) KCL‐286 activates RARβ/RXR signalling via retinoic acid response elements (RAREs), associated with increased BRCA1 expression, enhanced DNA repair and ...

Predicting the Encoding Error of SIRENs

open access: yesCoRR
Implicit Neural Representations (INRs), which encode signals such as images, videos, and 3D shapes in the weights of neural networks, are becoming increasingly popular. Among their many applications is signal compression, for which there is great interest in achieving the highest possible fidelity to the original signal subject to constraints such as ...

Importin 7 mediates the nuclear import of HIV‐1 integrase via a specific interacting interface

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
HIV‐1 integrase enables viral DNA integration into the host genome. By binding to the core domain of the host protein Importin 7 via its C‐terminal domain, the integrase is transported across the nuclear membrane into the nucleus, where integration of the viral genome into host DNA takes place. This translocation is a critical step for subsequent viral

Prediction in measurement error models

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Statistics
We study the well known difficult problem of prediction in measurement error models. By targeting directly at the prediction interval instead of the point prediction, we construct a prediction interval by providing estimators of both the center and the length of the interval which achieves a pre-determined prediction level.
