On prediction techniques for palette coding

2014 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2014
Screen content video coding is becoming increasingly important in various applications, such as desktop sharing, video conferencing, and remote education. In January 2014, the ITU-T and ISO/IEC MPEG jointly issued call for proposals for screen content coding as an extension of HEVC.

Predictive coding on-sensor compression

2008 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), 2008
This paper presents the design and measurements of a predictive coding on-sensor compression CMOS imager. Predictive coding is employed to decorrelate the image. The prediction operations are performed in the analog domain to avoid quantization noise and to decrease the area complexity of the circuit.

Segmental Prediction for Video Coding

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, 2017
The emerging standards for screen content coding (SCC) and 3D video coding known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)-SCC and 3D-HEVC, respectively, have been developed as extensions of HEVC. Compared with camera-captured video, screen content video and depth maps usually contain significantly fewer colors or sample intensities and much sharper edges

Predictive coding: Neuroscience and art

2020
This paper examines the applicability of predictive coding as an explanatory model for perception. This is carried out from two perspectives. First, the central assumptions of the model are re-examined in light of the neuroscientific evidence for the structure and functioning of key brain areas involved in perception. The inferential processes involved

Neuronal Dynamics of Predictive Coding

The Neuroscientist, 2001
A critical task of the central nervous system is to learn causal relationships between stimuli to anticipate events in the future, such as the position of a moving prey or predator. What are the neuronal phenomena underlying anticipation? In this article, I review recent results in hippocampal electrophysiology that shed light on this issue.

Predictive coding of correlated sources

Manufacturing Engineer, 2005
A lossy coding scheme is proposed for separate encoding and joint decoding of two correlated sequences. The algorithm simultaneously exploits the correlation between the sequences (using a binning-based quantization scheme) and that between the samples of each sequence (using linear prediction).

Predictive coding in agency detection

Religion, Brain & Behavior, 2017
Agency detection is a central concept in the cognitive science of religion (CSR). Experimental studies, however, have so far failed to lend support to some of the most common predictions that follo...

Predictive coding, precision and synchrony

Cognitive Neuroscience, 2012
Abstract Gotts, Chow and Martin provide a very nice review of repetition priming and suppression that reaches a compelling conclusion-we need to look more closely at synchronization in learning and priming. Indeed, current modeling work focuses on this issue-namely, the dynamic causal modeling of electrophysiological responses to address the role of ...

Universal prediction and universal coding

Systems and Computers in Japan, 2003
AbstractAlthough prediction schemes called “universal” are now abundant, very little attention has been devoted to the definition of universal prediction. This paper addresses, for α‐nary (α ≥ 2) sequences, the criteria of successful universal prediction and the prediction schemes that achieve the goals.

Predictive Coding in Cortical Microcircuits

2008
We investigate the influence of spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) on the prediction properties of recurrent microcircuits. We use sparsely connected networks in which the synaptic modifications introduced by STDP are complemented by two homeostatic plasticity mechanisms: synaptic normalization and intrinsic plasticity.
