The Predictive Value of History in Dyspepsia
Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, 1990Symptomatic patients referred to an open-access upper gastrointestinal endoscopy completed a detailed, self-administered questionnaire aimed at assessing the predictive value of history in dyspepsia. Nine hundred and thirty patients were suitable for analysis. Of these, 29% were found to have organic dyspepsia.

On Prediction of Extreme Values
Journal of Ship Research, 1973This paper discusses the prediction of the extreme values of a stationary random process having an arbitrary bandwidth spectrum. Formulas to predict the extreme values are derived for a given number of observations and time by applying order statistics, and the effect of bandwidth of spectrum on the extreme values is discussed.

Predictive value of statistical models
Statistics in Medicine, 1990AbstractA review is given of different ways of estimating the error rate of a prediction rule based on a statistical model. A distinction is drawn between apparent, optimum and actual error rates. Moreover it is shown how cross‐validation can be used to obtain an adjusted predictor with smaller error rate.

A 50 year old man presents with a sore throat. You suspect streptococcal pharyngitis and request a rapid streptococcal antigen test. The sensitivity of this test is 80% and the specificity is 95%. The prevalence of streptococcal pharyngitis in adults with pharyngitis is 10%. What is the likelihood that the patient has streptococcal pharyngitis if the

Predictive value and prevalence
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1990The following comments refer to the article by Patsner and Mann (The value of preoperative serum CA 125 levels in patients with a pelvic mass). The authors found that elevated preoperative serum CA 125 levels are more predictive of malignancy in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal women.

Given a number of record values from independent and identically distributed random variables with a continuous distribution function F, our aim is to predict future record values under suitable assumptions on the tail of F. In this paper, we are primarily concerned with finding reasonable tolerance regions for future record values.

Predictive value of neuropathic traits
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, 1977The classic textbook concepts of neuropathic traits ‐ enuresis, nail‐biting, finger‐sucking, sleep‐walking, anxiety, nightmares, fear of darkness ‐ have been anamnestically recorded in patients in a somatic hospital who were referred for psychiatric interview.
