The diagnosis and management of ectopic pregnancy is changing rapidly. More sensitive pregnancy tests and high-resolution transvaginal sonography are making the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy easier and earlier. In the future, we may become more confident with the ultrasound diagnosis of some ectopic pregnancies such that laparoscopic confirmation will

Ectopic pregnancy occurs in 2% of all pregnancies and is a potentially life-threatening emergency. A high level of clinical suspicion is required for any pregnant patient who presents with vaginal bleeding and/or pelvic pain. Workup should begin with immediate triage based on vital signs, a pregnancy test, and transvaginal ultrasound. Ectopic pregnancy

During the last two decades, the incidence of ectopic pregnancy was shown to be rising. At the same time, ectopic pregnancy became less lethal due to improvements in diagnostic procedures, which are now able to confirm the ectopic implantation before the occurrence of life-threatening hemorrhagic complications.

Using transvaginal color Doppler it becomes possible to detect prominent blood flow signals from the vital trophoblast of ectopic pregnancy (RI 0.40). In cases of tubal abortion it is possible to detecte an increase in the vascular resistance. Transvaginal color Doppler is useful tool for diagnosis and follow up of the patients with ectopic pregnancy.

SUMMARYA series of 20 patients who had an ectopic gestation is reviewed, and the ultrasonic findings discussed. The series is too small for statistical analysis. The findings in the acute stages of rupture of an ectopic or tubal abortion are sufficiently encouraging (12 correct diagnoses in 15 patients) to lead one to persevere in attempts to improve ...

The diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy has become precise and reliable. Consequently, the management of ectopic pregnancy has progressed to the point where the physician is often able to preserve fertility. Therefore, conservative surgery is indicated if the patient desires future fertility and conditions are appropriate.

ABSTRACTThe incidence of ectopic pregnancy in the United States has been reported to be as high as 20 per 1000 pregnancies, a more than 4‐fold increase over the last 20 years. Clinical presentation can range from subtle, nonspecific abdominal complaints to acute onset pain or hemorrhagic bleeding.
