According to WHO, adolescence extends from ages 10 to 19. Adolescent pregnancies are mostly unplanned, with 16 million live births and five millions abortions a year worldwide. Ninety-five percent teenage pregnancies occur in poor countries, mainly in Africa. The USA shows the highest adolescent pregnancy rate in Western countries.

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1961Summary We have presented the results of a study of pregnancy in 1,137 adolescent patients of 16 years of age and under and have presented a review of the recent literature. These patients presented an increase in the incidence of severe toxemia, especially in the girls of 15 years of age and under.

Preoperative Pregnancy Testing in Adolescents
Anesthesia & Analgesia, 1996Anesthetics and other drugs used during the perioperative period may have teratogenic or abortive effects. The pregnancy status of surgical patients is often unknown. This investigation examined retrospectively the results of 2 yr of mandatory pregnancy testing in 412 adolescent surgical patients. The overall incidence of positive tests was 1.2%.

To have done otherwise would have been misleading, for these rates prove to have been mercurial: stable from 1980 to 1985, markedly increased for 1985 to 1990.
