Time domain simulations of preliminary breakdown pulses in natural lightning [PDF]
AbstractLightning discharge is a complicated process with relevant physical scales spanning many orders of magnitude. In an effort to understand the electrodynamics of lightning and connect physical properties of the channel to observed behavior, we construct a simulation of charge and current flow on a narrow conducting channel embedded in three ...

We have studied the parameters of preliminary breakdown (PB) pulses in 395 normal and 319 inverted intracloud (IC) flashes observed in Gifu, Japan, and Ningxia, China, respectively, by using a low-frequency mapping system called fast antenna lightning ...

Lightning initiation: Strong pulses of VHF radiation accompany preliminary breakdown [PDF]
We analyze lightning initiation process using magnetic field waveforms of preliminary breakdown (PB) pulses observed at time scales of a few tens of microseconds by a broad-band receiver.

Locating Preliminary Breakdown Pulses in Positive Cloud‐to‐Ground Lightning [PDF]
AbstractThis paper provides the first concrete evidence that preliminary breakdown (PB) pulses of either polarity in positive cloud‐to‐ground (+CG) lightning are produced by negative leaders. Three‐dimensional location results of PB pulses in 46 +CG flashes are analyzed.

Lightning-generated electric field measurement is used to characterize cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes. Prior to the first return stroke (FRS), these signals sometimes exhibit a pulse train, known as preliminary breakdown pulses (PBP), whose study provides ...

Temporal and Spatial Characteristics of Preliminary Breakdown Pulses in Intracloud Lightning Flashes [PDF]
AbstractWe have studied the temporal and spatial characteristics of preliminary breakdown (PB) pulses in 32 normal intracloud flashes recorded by a fast antenna lightning mapping array system called Fast Antenna Lightning Mapping Array. It was found that PB processes started with a stage of preliminary isolated pulses (PIPs) and followed by classic PB ...

AbstractPreliminary breakdown pulses (PBPs) occur in the initial phase of lightning. A realistic model for their description is employed to investigate relation between PBP peak currents and PBP electric field amplitudes and their relation to the return stroke (RS) peak currents.

Pulse trains that are characteristic of preliminary breakdown in cloud‐to‐ground lightning but are not followed by return stroke pulses [PDF]
In this study, we identify and examine electric field pulse trains that are characteristic of preliminary breakdown in negative cloud‐to‐ground discharges but are not followed by return stroke waveforms. We assume that such trains are manifestations of the initiation of downward negative stepped leaders that fail to propagate all the way to the ground ...

Subionospheric propagation and peak currents of preliminary breakdown pulses before negative cloud‐to‐ground lightning discharges [PDF]
AbstractWe analyze broadband electromagnetic measurements of pulse sequences occurring prior to first return strokes of negative cloud‐to‐ground lightning flashes. Signals generated by lightning discharges were recorded close to the thunderstorm by a magnetic field receiver and traveled up to 600 km to three distant electric field receivers.
