Role of the Preoptic Area in Sleep and Thermoregulation. [PDF]
Sleep and body temperature are tightly interconnected in mammals: warming up our body helps to fall asleep and the body temperature in turn drops while falling asleep. The preoptic area of the hypothalamus (POA) serves as an essential brain region to coordinate sleep and body temperature.

Lateral preoptic area neurons signal cocaine self-administration behaviors. [PDF]
Abstract The lateral preoptic area is implicated in numerous aspects of substance use disorder. In particular, the lateral preoptic area is highly sensitive to the pharmacological properties of psychomotor stimulants, and its activity promotes drug‐seeking in the face of punishment and reinstatement during abstinence.

Macroscale connections of the mouse lateral preoptic area and anterior lateral hypothalamic area. [PDF]
AbstractThe macroscale neuronal connections of the lateral preoptic area (LPO) and the caudally adjacent lateral hypothalamic area anterior region (LHAa) were investigated in mice by anterograde and retrograde axonal tracing. Both hypothalamic regions are highly and diversely connected, with connections to >200 gray matter regions spanning the ...

Astrocytes in the Ventrolateral Preoptic Area Promote Sleep [PDF]
Although ventrolateral preoptic (VLPO) nucleus is regarded as a center for sleep promotion, the exact mechanisms underlying the sleep regulation are unknown. Here, we used optogenetic tools to identify the key roles of VLPO astrocytes in sleep promotion.

Glucoregulatory responses to hypothalamic preoptic area cooling [PDF]
Normal glucose homeostasis depends on the capacity of pancreatic β-cells to adjust insulin secretion in response to a change of tissue insulin sensitivity. In cold environments, for example, the dramatic increase of insulin sensitivity required to ensure a sufficient supply of glucose to thermogenic tissues is offset by a proportionate reduction of ...

Dopamine Activates Noradrenergic Receptors in the Preoptic Area [PDF]
Dopamine (DA) facilitates male sexual behavior and modulates aromatase activity in the quail preoptic area (POA). Aromatase neurons in the POA receive dopaminergic inputs, but the anatomical substrate that mediates the behavioral and endocrine effects of DA is poorly understood.

Recovery of Sleep Atter Fetal Preoptic Transplantation in Medial Preoptic Area-lesioned Rats [PDF]
Changes in sleep after fetal preoptic (POA) tissue transplantation were studied in rats which had been made insomniac by a medial preoptic area (mPOA) lesion. Two days after the N-methyl D-aspartic acid (NMDA) lesion of the mPOA, fetal POA tissues (obtained from 14- to 17-day-old fetuses) were transplanted into the lesioned mPOA.
