Tube Press Hardening for Lightweight Design

open access: yesASME 2011 International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference, Volume 1, 2011
Press hardening is an innovative technology being applied to meet the growing demands for both lightweight and crash performance qualities. To further increase the lightweight potential, closed profiles are being used. As a result, a method has been developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU which allows the ...

Granular media-based tube press hardening

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2016
Abstract Press hardening process can benefit the formability of 22MnB5 in high temperature and high strength as a final product. It is widely used for weight reduction of car body without sacrifice of its crashworthiness. Nevertheless, not only strength but also stiffness is important for some vehicle components.

Corrosion of press-hardened galvanized steel

Corrosion Science, 2012
Abstract Press hardening of hot-dip-galvanized steel sheet yields an innovative product with high strength and reduced weight with drastically increasing industrial importance. This process results in an austenitisation of the steel and a conversion of the 10 μm Zn layer into a 20 μm thick coating consisting of zinc saturated α-iron and Γ-FeZn-phases.

Optimization of Cooling Simulation in Press Hardening

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2011
This paper compares methods used for integration of cooling system in the press hardening simulation. For this purpose an experimental tool was developed and constructed. This tool makes it possible to compare and validate different simulation methods applicable for cooling systems and resolves the question of their importance.

Characterisation of Tool Coatings for Press Hardening

Advanced Materials Research, 2014
Hot sheet metal forming is gaining in importance in many fields, because of its capability to produce more complex components than possible with cold forming. Hot forming is also used to influence the final material properties with the hot forming of manganese-boron steels being a good example.

Bake-partitioning in a press-hardening steel

Scripta Materialia, 2019
Abstract Bake-partitioning, a process integrating paint-baking of car-body assembling to induce carbon partitioning into austenite, has been proposed for enhancing the ductility of press-hardening steels. Carbon is estimated to diffuse a maximum distance of 2.7 nm in austenite at 170 °C for 20 min.
