Numerical approach to the modelling of transient interaction of prospective combustor concepts and conventional high pressure turbines

open access: yesPropulsion and Power Research, 2019
The Institute of Gas Turbines and Aerospace Propulsion at Technische Universität Darmstadt conducts research projects in the field of “combustor turbine interaction” (CTI). This paper presents numerical studies on the interaction between novel combustion

The impact of film cooling on the heat release within a rotating detonation combustor

open access: yesApplications in Energy and Combustion Science
Rotating detonation combustors establish a detonation wave that continuously circulates inside a small annulus. The presence of the detonation wave and the downstream oblique shock within the small annulus coupled with high mass flow induces a high heat ...

Benefits and Challenges of Pressure-Gain Combustion Systems for Gas Turbines [PDF]

open access: yesMechanical Engineering, 2009
This article discusses benefits and challenges of Pressure-Gain Combustion Systems for Gas Turbines. The article also highlights that one approach to substantially improve gas turbine thermal efficiency is to replace the nearly constant pressure combustion process with some form of pressure-gain heat release such as either a constant volume or ...

Effects of Key Inlet Design Parameters on the Performance of Supplementary Combustion Nozzle [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics
Solid rocket motors (SRMs) have limited propulsion performance due to their short fuel combustion duration and low specific impulse. The supplementary combustion nozzle (SCN) injects air into the nozzle expansion section to promote secondary combustion ...

Exploring the deflagration-autoignition-detonation transition in the context of pressure gain combustion

open access: yesJoint Meeting of International Workshop on Detonation for Propulsion (IWDP) and International Constant Volume and Detonation Combustion Workshop (ICVDCW), 2022
Autoignition of hot spots can develop into a detonation under certain conditions. Detonations must be suppressed in Constant Volume Combustion and promoted in Rotating Detonation Combustion.

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Impact of MgO Additions on the Oxidation Resistance and Compression Behavior of Vanadium Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An increase in oxidation resistance at 600 °C is achieved for alloys containing more than 2.5 wt.% MgO. It has been established that, along with V2O5, MgO6V2, and Mg2O7V2 are formed, which are presumed to enhance oxidative stability. Furthermore, the possible transformation of Mg‐vanadates through reaction with CO2, which presumably occurs in this ...
