Prey dominance in discrete predator-prey systems with a prey refuge

Mathematical Biosciences, 1997
The effects of a prey refuge in a multiprey discrete system with predation is studied. We demonstrate the stable coexistence of species that would otherwise exclude each other without a prey refuge. With a prey refuge, we show that an endangered prey not only recovers from the brink of extinction, but also dominates the system.

Increased prey vulnerability as a result of prey-prey interactions

Hydrobiologia, 1995
This study examines indirect effects in a trophic system with three levels, consisting of two prey species, a top predator, and an intermediate predator. Qualitative data showed that the activity of both the top predator Aeshna juncea (Odonata) and the active prey Heterocope saliens, (Copepoda) caused bouts of swimming in the sedentary prey Sida ...

THE RECENT antitrust policy literature which seeks to define predatory pricing contains a flood of proposals which have "pervasively transformed an entire body of law".1 One theme of this literature is that a readily anticipatable standard should be established, so that firms will not fear being sued for normal competitive responses; another is that ...

Detecting Prey Preferences and Prey Switching

2021
AbstractIn this chapter I consider the question of whether predators switch their preference for different types of prey as those prey change in abundance. There are numerous experiments in the literature focusing on this, but generally they have focused on a simplified analysis that ignores the functional response.

Prey refuges and predator-prey stability

Theoretical Population Biology, 1987
Abstract Refuge use can be broadly defined to include any strategy that decreases predation risk, e.g., spatial or temporal refuges, prey aggregations, or reduced search activity by prey. The existence of refuges can clearly have important effects on the coexistence of predators and prey. Previous models have only considered the effects of a constant
