Taxonomic significance of the abaxial lemma surface in southern African members of Helictotrichon (Poaceae)

open access: yesBothalia: African Biodiversity & Conservation, 2015
Background: Helictotrichon (excluding Amphibromus, Avenula, Helictochloa and Tricholemma), a genus of temperate C3 grasses, is represented by 14 species in southern Africa.

Defence emergence during early ontogeny reveals important differences between spines, thorns and prickles.

open access: yesAnnals of Botany, 2019
Large mammalian herbivores made the world spiny. Over evolutionary time scales, the rise of physically defended plants – species that produce spines, thorns or prickles – has been linked to the diversification of large herbivores.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Research on Organic Acids in Fruit Wine and Acid Reduction Strategies

open access: yesShipin gongye ke-ji, 2023
The type and content of organic acids have important influence on the quality of fruit wine. Proper amount of organic acids can give fruit wine soft taste, and has certain antibacterial effect.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

A new species of the genus Cottus (Scorpaeniformes, Cottidae) from the Baltic Sea Basin and its phylogenetic placement

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Taxonomy, 2022
The genus Cottus contains more than 60 species that are common in freshwater bodies of northern Eurasia and North America. Despite the abundance of species, this genus has been insufficiently studied in Eastern European rivers and lakes.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
