This chapter discusses the primacy of rank in establishing social relations aboard whaleships. While racial prejudices acted as a gatekeeper in the process of hiring by suggesting what kinds of work individuals of particular races were best suited for, ship rules mandated foremost that a whaleman’s duties and status followed from his rank.
