Efficacy of primaquine regimens for primaquine-resistant Plasmodium vivax malaria in Thailand.
The American journal of tropical medicine and hygiene, 1999To define the current efficacy of Fansidar (F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., Basel Switzerland) (pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine), primaquine in a high dose, and artesunate for treating acute Plasmodium vivax malaria, we conducted a comparative clinical trial of these 3 drugs in an open-label study. Patients (15-65 years old) were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments

Primaquine, 6-methoxy-8-(4′-amino-1′-methylbutyl-amino)quinoline (PQ), is still the drug of choice for the complete eradication of the exoerythrocytic liver forms of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale (Bruce-Chwatt 1980). The clinical use of PQ as a causal prophylactic and therapeutic agent is, however, curtailed by its toxic side effects ...

Journal of the American Medical Association, 1952
This report deals with the problem in mass therapy presented by the large number of cases of vivax malaria occurring in the United Nations forces in Korea since 1950. Because malaria is not a single disease but instead is a complex of diseases all caused by a member of the genus plasmodium the unique properties of the members of the various species ...

Differential Metabolism of the Enantiomers of Primaquine
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1988When racemic primaquine was administered to rats, the majority of the residual primaquine excreted in urine was found to be the (+)-isomer. Using a liver microsome preparation, there was no selectivity in the metabolism of the (+)- and (-)-isomers; however, a liver fraction containing mitochondria and microsomes did show selectivity.

Primaquine, an 8-aminoquinoline, forms a cross-linked gel with periodate-oxidized gum arabic rapidly by simply mixing the drug with the oxidized polysaccharide due to Schiff's base formation between the two amino groups of primaquine and the aldehyde groups in the oxidized polysaccharide.

Synthesis of site specifically deuterated primaquines II. N‐alkyl deuterated primaquines
Journal of Labelled Compounds and Radiopharmaceuticals, 1984AbstractTwo site specifically deuterated primaquines were prepared. 4′,4′‐Dideutero primaquine 3 was obtained from the corresponding dideutero alcohol which was prepared by the low temperature reduction of the ester compound 4 with lithium aluminium deuteride.

4. TOXICITY OF PRIMAQUINE IN NEGROES
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1952Hemolytic reactions during antimalarial therapy have proved to be a limiting factor in the use of 8-aminoquinolines for the cure of vivax malaria. The most severe type of reaction is clinically identical to blackwater fever, and is characterized by massive, explosive, intravascular hemolysis with hemoglobinemia and hemoglobinuria, which constitutes a ...

Primaquine Diphosphate: Comprehensive Profile
2005Publisher Summary This chapter deals with primaquine diphosphate, which is an orange‐red or orange crystalline powder, odorless and has bitter taste, solution is acid to litmus. Primaquine is an 8‐ aminoquinoline antimalarial agent, which is effective as tissue schizontocide against intrahepatic forms of all types of malaria parasite and is used to ...

Primaquine Phosphate Is the Drug of Choice
Pediatrics, 1978The article by Thompson et al. on congenital malaria (Pediatrics 60:209, August 1977) needs to be clarified. If the patient was given only chloroquine phosphate, as stated in the article, a clinical and not a radical cure was effected. This patient will sooner or later have a resurgence of symptoms unless he was also treated with primaquine phosphate ...
