Treating Pox, Pests and Worms: Saints, Sympathy and Materiality in Late‐Medieval English Charms

open access: yesJournal of Religious History, Volume 49, Issue 1, Page 3-20, March 2025.
Charms were a commonplace form of medical intervention in late‐medieval England, as they allowed afflicted and ailing devotees to seek the aid of saints and biblical figures. Those holy dead who had suffered something on earth were considered particularly adept at posthumously treating the same in their devotees, with the words used to recount their ...

CLASS, CLIMATE AND CITIES: Why is ‘Sustainability’ Most Popular at an Urban Scale?

open access: yesInternational Journal of Urban and Regional Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Class is crucial for understanding why sustainability has become so much more popular at the urban than at other scales. The urban scale is where the capitalist class can most easily colour their investments ‘green’ without confronting the overall power of fossil capital.

Aerosol Measurements and Decadal Changes: The Role of Climatic Changes and How It Reflects in Respiratory Allergies and Asthma

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The causative agents of respiratory allergies are bioaerosols, such as house dust mite feces, pollen grains, and fungal spores. Climate change and urbanization are considered to lead to an increase in the load of allergenic bioaerosols due to impacts on plant phenophases and allergenicity. Continuous and efficient monitoring of the atmospheric

Increased aeolian activity linked to Neoglacial cooling and glacier advance in southern Greenland

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Intense aeolian activity observed in the Igaliku Kujalleq records in S Greenland is not related to Norse activities. Instead, we suggest that changes in the North Atlantic atmospheric circulation pattern combined with Neoglacial glacier advances led to increased katabatic wind activity and triggered increased aeolian activity from large outwash plains.

Relative sea‐level trends in southern Norway during the last millennium

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Relative sea level in southern Norway has been falling since c. 7000 cal. yr BP, but modern tide gauge data show rising relative sea level since at least 1960 CE. In this study, peat cores from a shallow coastal basin were analysed, using a multiproxy approach, to reconstruct relative sea level trends over the last millennium and to identify the onset ...
