Of 282 patients who underwent rigid proctosigmoidoscopy (PSS) in primary care in the city of Västerås during 1985, 5.7% had polyps or tumours in the rectum. Barium examination of the large bowel was performed on 194 of these 282 patients and showed polyps or tumours in 6.2%.
