The Defensive Activation Theory: REM Sleep as a Mechanism to Prevent Takeover of the Visual Cortex

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2021
Regions of the brain maintain their territory with continuous activity: if activity slows or stops (e.g., because of blindness), the territory tends to be taken over by its neighbors.

Lactoferrin treatment activates acetylcholinesterase, decreasing acetylcholine levels in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell culture supernatants, inhibiting cell survival

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Representation of the suggested mode of action of lactoferrin (Lf) in nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cells. Lf induces activation of caspase‐3 by activating p53 and AChE leading to decreased ACh concentrations. In turn, ACh signaling leads to activation of VEGF and AKT and blocking of caspase‐3.

SIGNIFICANCE OF UROGENITAL INFECTIONS IN PATHOLOGY OF PREGNANCY AND DELIVERY IN EXPERIMENTS

open access: yesИнфекция и иммунитет, 2014
. Development of adequate models in laboratory animals is highly important to detect etiological links between urogenital tract pathology and chlamydia, mycoplasma and ureaplasma bacteria.

Male Reproductive Strategies in Black and Gold Howler Monkeys (Alouatta caraya) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Behavioral and demographic factors such as group size, social structure, dispersal patterns, and mating systems affect male reproductive success. In the present study, we analyze the relationship between social structure, genetic relatedness of adult ...

Next‐Generation Bio‐Reducible Lipids Enable Enhanced Vaccine Efficacy in Malaria and Primate Models

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Structure–activity relationship (SAR) optimization of bio‐reducible ionizable lipids enables the development of highly effective lipid nanoparticle (LNP) mRNA vaccines. Lead LNPs show superior tolerability and antibody responses in rodents and primates, outperforming approved COVID‐19 vaccine lipids.

Sensitivity to Measurement Errors in Studies on Prosocial Choice using a Two-Choice Paradigm

open access: yesStudies in Logic, Grammar and Rhetoric, 2016
Research on prosocial behaviors in primates often relies on the two-choice paradigm. Motoric lateralization is a surprisingly big problem in this field of research research, as it may influence which lever will ultimately be chosen by the actor.

Determinants of Variations in Fecal Neopterin in Free-Ranging Mandrills

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2019
Recent progress in designing non-invasive tools to monitor wildlife health offers promising perspectives in immune ecology. In this study, we investigated individual differences in fecal neopterin, a non-invasive marker closely associated with the ...

Increased sampling reveals novel lineages of Entamoeba: consequences of genetic diversity and host specificity for taxonomy and molecular detection. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
To expand the representation for phylogenetic analysis, ten additional complete Entamoeba small-subunit rRNA gene sequences were obtained from humans, non-human primates, cattle and a tortoise. For some novel sequences no corresponding morphological data

PRELIVE: A Framework for Predicting Lipid Nanoparticles In Vivo Efficacy and Reducing Reliance on Animal Testing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
PREdicting LNP In Vivo Efficacy (PRELIVE) framework enables the prediction of lipid nanoparticle (LNPs) organ‐specific delivery through dual modeling approaches. Composition‐based models using formulation parameters and protein corona‐based models using biological fingerprints both achieve high predictive accuracy across multiple organs.

Tool skill impacts the archaeological evidence across technological primates

open access: yesScientific Reports
The archaeological record offers insights into our evolutionary past by revealing ancient behaviour through stone and fossil remains. Percussive foraging is suggested to be particularly relevant for the emergence of tool-use in our lineage, yet early ...
