Ecology of the Giant Armadillo (Priodontes maximus) in the Grasslands of Central Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesEdentata, 2009
Abstract The giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus) is the largest armadillo and is considered at risk of extinction by IUCN. Due to its fossorial and highly cryptic nature, it is also one of the least-studied mammals. The Cerrado grassland-savannahs of central South America comprises approximately 25 percent of the species' range, and the 1320 km2 Emas ...

Redefining ecosystem integrity for an Anthropocene biosphere: a process‐ and lineage‐based framework for restoration

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Restoration increasingly operates in rapidly transforming landscapes shaped by human‐driven global change, where historical reference states no longer represent achievable or even desirable targets. Yet, ecological restoration and conservation management still rely on composition‐based definitions of ecosystem integrity that assume stable reference ...

Seasonal dynamics of terrestrial vertebrate abundance between Amazonian flooded and unflooded forests [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The flood pulse is the main factor structuring and differentiating the ecological communities of Amazonian unflooded (terra firme) and seasonally-flooded (várzea) forests as they require unique adaptations to survive the prolonged annual floods ...

Community-based population recovery of overexploited Amazonian wildlife [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The Amazon Basin experienced a pervasive process of resource overexploitation during the 20th-century, which induced severe population declines of many iconic vertebrate species.

Surviving in the Amazon Arc of Deforestation: Richness and Defaunation of Mammals in Priority‐Protected Areas of the Brazilian Midwest

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 50, Issue 7, July 2025.
We found rich and compositionally different assemblages of medium and large‐sized mammals in protected areas on the southern edge of Amazon. However, both have high rates of mammal defaunation. We argue that anthropogenic threats in the Amazon Arc of Deforestation are eroding large ungulate populations, especially peccaries.

New Records of Giant ArmadilloPriodontes maximus(Cingulata: Dasypodidae) at Serra do Amolar, Pantanal of Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesEdentata, 2012
Abstract The giant armadillo is one of the least studied South American mammals. It is classified as Vulnerable due to habitat loss and subsistence hunting. This species has been recorded at several sites within the Pantanal biome of Brazil. We aimed to confirm the species presence in Serra do Amolar, in the western border of the Pantanal. Using camera
