Recycling‐Induced Copper Contamination of a 42CrMo4 Quench and Tempering Steel—Scaling and Susceptibility to Hot Shortness

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4261-4269, August 2026.
In this study, the susceptibility to copper‐induced hot shortness of the alloy 42CrMo4 is investigated by different hot tensile tests, as well as by a detailed analysis of the formed oxidation products. While an enrichment of metallic copper and a penetration of the grain boundaries are observed, no critical reduction of the tensile test properties can

Alteration of Phase Transformation Behavior and Prior Austenite Grain Structure Due to Elevated Tramp Element Concentrations in a Hypoeutectoid Steel

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4293-4305, August 2026.
The phase transformation behavior of a hypoeutectoid steel is studied in comparison with alloys containing higher concentrations of tramp elements, simulating high recycling rates. The examination of microstructures reveals that the tramp elements facilitate the formation of displacive phases along with retained austenite.

Recycling End‐of‐Life Solid Oxide Cell Interconnect Assemblies into Commercial‐Grade AISI 304 Stainless Steels

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4363-4381, August 2026.
This study validates a recycling pathway for converting interconnect assemblies from end‐of‐life SOC stacks into commercial‐grade AISI 304 steels. Using scrap‐based steelmaking operations, austenitic cast steels with <4.0% δ‐ferrite are successfully produced.

Electrolytic and Chemical Etching : To Reveal Prior Austenite Grain Size (PAGS)

open access: yes

Thermodynamic Modeling of Sn–C and Fe–Sn–C Systems for the Tramp Elements Control in Steel Production

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4246-4260, August 2026.
A CALculation of PHAse Diagrams thermodynamic modeling for Fe–Sn–C system is carried out. The model and the developed database can be used to calculate phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of this system over wide temperature/composition range, and a part of a larger thermodynamic database for steel and alloy system, and effectively used to ...

Role of Prior Austenite Grain Size in the Carbide-Driven Temper Embrittlement of Low-Phosphorus Ni-Cr-Mo Steels

open access: yesMetals
Temper embrittlement (TE) degrades the toughness of high-strength Ni-Cr-Mo steels, typically driven by competing mechanisms of impurity segregation and carbide precipitation.

Increasing the Reuse Potential of High‐Strength Steels by Extending the Fatigue Life through Surface Treatments

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4326-4336, August 2026.
Surface reconditioning through mechanical and electrochemical polishing is shown to extend the fatigue life of predamaged 42CrMo4 steel by over 12 times. By removing ≈100 μm of surface material, surface‐driven fatigue damage is mitigated. This study introduces a reuse potential metric to evaluate fatigue recovery and support sustainable steel reuse. Exploiting Residual Elements Arising from Scrap Steel in Future Sustainable Steel Alloy Design

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4270-4281, August 2026.
Herein, the effects of residual elements Cu and Sn on grain growth, recrystallization, and phase transformation in C–Mn steel are summarized, and a case study is presented on how the presence of residual elements can be exploited to reduce deliberate Nb microalloying while achieving the same grain size control and strength during thermomechanical ...

Influence of Tramp Elements on Phase Transformations, Structure, and Properties of Scrap‐Based Steels: A Focused Review of Recent Developments

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4067-4084, August 2026.
This review explains how impurities from recycled scrap affect steel production and performance. Even small amounts (far below 1%) of these impurities can change how steel behaves during fabrication but also affect the properties of the end product. With better understanding and targeted countermeasures, these challenges can be managed, enabling wider ...
