Effect of Prior Austenite Grain Size on the Morphology of Nano-Bainitic Steels

open access: yesMetallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2018
The strength in nanostructured bainitic steels primarily arises from the fine platelets of bainitic ferrite embedded in carbon-enriched austenite. However, the toughness is dictated by the shape and volume fraction of the retained austenite. Therefore, the exact determination of processing–morphology relationships is necessary to design stronger and ...

Stem imaging of prior austenite grain boundaries

Scripta Materialia, 2000
The problem of temper embrittlement of low-alloy steels used in steam-turbine generators was thought to have been solved by the introduction of clean steels with low levels of certain impurities. However, even these steels exhibit temper embrittlement at turbine operation temperatures >400 C. Initial studies of temper embrittlement of clean steels used

Visualization of Prior Austenite Grain Boundaries in Low-Carbon Steels

Practical Metallography, 2021
Abstract Knowledge of the size of the prior austenite grain is of key importance. If abnormal grain growth occurs during austenitization, the resultant inhomogeneous microstructure may negatively affect the strength and toughness properties of the final product.

The Effect of Austenitizing Temperature on Prior Austenite Grain Size in Martensitic Cast Steel

Solid State Phenomena, 2013
The GX12CrMoVNbN9-1 (GP91) cast steel belongs to a new group of high-temperature creep resistant cast steels being introduced to the power industry. The cast steel is characterized by higher mechanical properties in comparison with the low alloy Cr – Mo or Cr – Mo – V cast steels used so far.

Etching of prior austenite grain boundaries in martensite

Metallography, 1973
Abstract The etching of prior austenite grain boundaries in martensite for detailed quantitative metallography of British standard En 18 steel has been carried out using aqueous or ethereal solutions of picric acid, whereas alcohol was an unsuitable solvent.

Refinement of Prior Austenite Grain in Advanced Pipeline Steel

2011
A series of fundamental and applied investigations were carried out to develop high grade pipeline steel with high Mn high Nb design, and it mostly focused on that the static and dynamic recrystallization behaviors of high Mn high Nb pipeline steel. Various experimental methods were adopted, which include stress relaxation tests, physical metallurgical

Development of an Oxidation Method for Prior Austenite Grain Boundary Revelation

Metallography, Microstructure, and Analysis, 2018
The prior austenite grain size is a very important quantitative parameter which has a great influence on steel final microstructure and properties. Therefore, its measurement is a useful metallographic tool. To measure the austenitic grain size, it is necessary to reveal the prior austenitic grain boundaries by applying contrast methods.

Etching of prior austenite grain boundaries in AISI 4140 steel

Metallography, 1971
Abstract AISI 4140 steel has been etched in aqueous picric acid containing a wetting agent to show up the prior austenite grain boundaries for a wide range of quenching and tempering treatments. Satisfactory etching procedures are outlined, and the efficacy of the etchant in delineating ferrite/pearlite microstructures is reported.
