A general etchant for revealing prior-austenite grain boundaries in steels

Materials Characterization, 1993
Abstract The aqueous CrO3NaOH-picric acid solution, heated to 120–130°C, will reveal prior-austenite grain boundaries in carbon steels, alloy steels (including alloys with more than 1% Si), and high-carbon, high-chromium steels with different microstructures. The etchant is easy to prepare and utilize.

Effect of Prior Austenite Microstructure on Austenite/Ferrite Transformation of Fine Grained High Strength Low Alloy Steel

open access: yesMaterials Science Forum, 2003
Grain size refinement can be achieved by heavy deformation of the HSLA steel. Ferrites nucleated during hot working was defined as strain induced dynamic transformation(SIDT) ferrite and reported as an important factor to refine the final ferrite grains.

Etching and image analysis of prior austenite grain boundaries in hardened steels

Materials Characterization, 1991
Abstract Aqueous solutions saturated with picric acid and containing sodium trideylbenzene sulfonate and HCl effectively reveal prior austenite grain boundaries in hardened steel. Repolishing and re-etching increase grain boundary contrast relative to the matrix, and provide grain boundary networks that can be readily measured by an operator. However,

Factors affecting prior austenite grain size in low alloy steel

Journal of Materials Science, 2006
The effect of varying normalising and hardening temperatures on the prior austenite grain size in a low alloy Cr–Mo–Ni–V steel has been examined. An initial relative insensitivity of grain size to increasing austenitising temperature was observed followed by a sudden growth of grains at approximately 1000 °C. A detailed study of the precipitates in the

Influence of Repeated Quenching After Carburizing on Prior Austenite Grain Size

Materials Science Forum, 2007
High strengths and impact values are required for carburizing steels used for automotive drive train parts. It is well known that the finer-grain microstructures are favorable for these properties. In this study, with a view to effective refining of grain size with controlling the alloying elements, influence of Mn and Cr content on prior austenite ...

Prior austenite grain boundary embrittlement of low alloy steel by boron

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1980
Abstract A previous study of reheat cracking in a CrMoV steel (Ducol W-30), in which the fracture toughness of the coarse grain size region of the h.a.z. was measured as a function of temperature, revealed a large decrease in toughness at 600 °C accompanied by prior austenite grain boundary (p.a.g.b.) fracture (Ritter & McPherson ...

Prior austenite grains in steels laser surface alloyed with carbon

Materials Characterization, 1997
Prior austenite grain size is known to affect the hardness of martensite in conventional martensitic hardening of steels. These grains develop in solid state during austenitizing treatment. In the present study, however, it is pointed out that the prior austenite grains that form as a result of solidification in laser surface hardening of steels by ...

Measuring and evaluating the prior-austenite grain size of high-strength steel

open access: yes, 2018
The prior-austenite grain size significantly influences the refinement of the martensitic microstructure and therefore the mechanical, electrical and magnetic properties of a material.

The effect of prior-austenite grain size on the hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of UNI 40NiCrMo7

Materials Chemistry and Physics, 1986
Abstract Delayed failure tests were carried out on UNI 40NiCrMo7 steel subjected to sustained tensile loads and cathodically charged with hydrogen (d.d.c. = 8 mA/cm2), in a 0.1 N sulphuric acid solution. Our aim was to study the effect of austenitising heat treatment for different times and temperatures on the failure of UNI 40NiCrMo7 steel.
