Double Kernel Method Using Line Transect Sampling

open access: yesAustrian Journal of Statistics, 2016
A double kernel method as an alternative to the classical kernel method is proposed to estimate the population abundance by using line transect sampling.

Building a model for scoring 20 or more runs in a baseball game

open access: yes, 2010
How often can we expect a Major League Baseball team to score at least 20 runs in a single game? Considered a rare event in baseball, the outcome of scoring at least 20 runs in a game has occurred 224 times during regular season games since 1901 in the ...

Convergent and Divergent Connectivity Patterns of the Arcuate Fasciculus in Macaques and Humans

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study employs viral‐based single‐neuron tracing and dMRI‐based whole‐brain tractography to investigate arcuate fasciculus (AF) trajectories in macaque monkeys, and compares with the human AF connectome using spectral embedding. Results demonstrate conserved AF topography spanning temporoparietal‐auditory‐frontal pathways across primates, with ...

Profile Statistics for Sparse Contingency Tables under Poisson Sampling

open access: yesAustrian Journal of Statistics, 2016
Simple conditions for the inconsistency of classical likelihood ratio (LR) test in case of very sparse categorical data are given. The LR type test based on profile statistics is proposed as an alternative.

Adaptive Gibbs samplers and related MCMC methods

open access: yes, 2013
We consider various versions of adaptive Gibbs and Metropolis-within-Gibbs samplers, which update their selection probabilities (and perhaps also their proposal distributions) on the fly during a run by learning as they go in an attempt to optimize the ...

Engineering Compact Base Editors by AlphaFold‐Guided Mutation Scan and Escherichia coli‐Based Tri‐Selection

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A miniaturized deaminase SsdAtox was scanned with AlphaFold to identify DNA binding pocket hot spots. Site‐saturation mutagenesis at gatekeeper residue K31 yielded ten‐fold activity enhancement. Trinity Screen, an E. coli‐based three‐in‐one platform selecting for high activity and reduced double‐strand breaks, enabled combinatorial evolution at DNA ...

Scatter Matrices and Independent Component Analysis

open access: yesAustrian Journal of Statistics, 2016
In the independent component analysis (ICA) it is assumed that the components of the multivariate independent and identically distributed observations are linear transformations of latent independent components.

Asymptotically optimal multistage tests of simple hypotheses

open access: yes, 2007
A family of variable stage size multistage tests of simple hypotheses is described, based on efficient multistage sampling procedures. Using a loss function that is a linear combination of sampling costs and error probabilities, these tests are shown to ...

Precise Construction of an Antimicrobial Peptide Targeting Bacterial Cell Membranes Derived From Natural Peptides

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An AMP (P 3‐3R‐8I) based on natural peptides, which can target bacterial cell membranes, was precisely constructed via amino acid mutation. P 3‐3R‐8I exhibits antibacterial capability which could be attributed to the ability of P 3‐3R‐8I to quickly penetrate bacterial cell membranes and then to bind to bacterial DNA.
