An otherwise healthy 1-month-old female infant presented with a congenital nasal appendage in the left medial canthal region with associated left-sided nasal hypoplasia. The diagnosis of proboscis lateralis was made, and a 2-stage excision and reconstruction was performed in conjunction with probing and irrigation of the lacrimal system.

Holoprosencephaly with Proboscis
Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation, 1996This is the case of a male newborn with holoprosencephaly, marked hypotelorism, and a rudimentary nasal structure, the proboscis. The head CT scan showed a single monoventricle and two ocular globes fused at the midline. Chromosome studies showed a normal karyotype.

Abstract There are no subspecies according to the ISIS classification. The species is found in Borneo (Medway 1970; Hrdy 1977) and on two small islands close to its north-eastern coast: Berhala and Sebatik (Wolfheim 1983). It is a forest species most commonly found in riverine or coastal areas (Kawabe and Mano 1972; Happel et al. 1987).

Proboscis lateralis (PL) is a rare craniofacial anomaly with a reported incidence of less than 1 in 100 000. 1 Given the rarity of this condition, there is a paucity of reports documenting the characteristic appearance of this anomaly on physical examination and radiologic imaging.
